The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

Pudding Creek Trestle (MacKerricher Haul Road)

Another beautiful day on the coast - or maybe not!  I think everyone now thinks that rain is the 'new' beautiful.  Over breakfast this morning, someone said that the high that's sitting over our area causing these dry conditions is predicted to last until March.  Perhaps next week we should organize a rain dance at the end of our walk.  Anyone know how to do this?

Anyway, after all that talk of weather, we took my wife's car this morning which isn't equiped with an outside temperature sensor (these old cars - I don't know how she survives without these essentials of life), so will have to guess that it was about 40deg.

Ron arrived a bit late as he misunderstood where the walk would be this morning.  A discussion by the Fog Dodgers executive committee agreed that calling this walk MacKerricher is confusing, so have renamed it Pudding Creek Trestle(MacKerricer Haul Road).  That will probably now confuse everyone - except Ron of course!  In fact those observant ones may have noticed the new title for this blog.  Sorry Tom, while the cat's away.....

So present today were, Peter, Shari, John, Greg, Nancy B., Rick, Joe, Toni, Gerri, Kathy (a new face - good to see), Jim, Cindy, Gay, Mark - who brought daughter Sarah and grand-daughter Kira, Neil, Ron, Roger and Nancy T.  As always, forgive me if I missed people.

Photos are of this morning with one from John and one from Roger.

As this is the last blog of 2013, I'd like to wish all of you, your friends, loved ones and family a very happy and prosperous New Year.  I'd also like to thank you all for being such a great bunch of people.  Nancy and I consider ourselves very lucky to live here on the coast and to have found such a wonderfully friendly, eclectic and interesting group of people we're proud to call our friends.

Again - have a great week and see you all next year.

Big River

Merry Christmas!  J. Loomis

It was one of those mornings when everyone was chomping at the bit, wanting to get started, just a little bit early.  It was 45 degrees but with a stiff breeze that I'm sure brought brought the wind chill factor down to 20 or so!  Anyway, we did get going and it was great to find three new people joining our ranks.  Thanks to Fran, for bringing Kathy, to Suzanne and Henry for bringing Marlin, and to Ron LeValley for mentioning our group to Diane.  Hopefully, they all can come back often.

Also present today, and I apologize if I miss someone:  Dorothy, Nancy T., Roger, Linda, Tom T., Neil, Geri, Cheryl, Charlene,  Nancy B., Rick, John, Bob, Melissa, Nichole, Joel, Shari, Peter, Toni, Joe, Orah, Steve, Nancy and Tom (31).

Once we got up the road a bit, we were out of the breeze and it was a beautiful, but still very dry, winter morning.  This is, I believe, the driest year (at this point) in history.  It is strange to come home after each run with dusty shoes, rather than muddy ones.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!  We hope that 2014 brings you happiness, health and lots of fun.   I also hope that you return week after week, to join with the Fog Dodgers on our runs and walks.  It's a great way to start your day!  We really do have a wonderful and very diverse group of people.

For anyone wanting to join us for our Tuesday or Thursday run, please note that until the end of January, the start time has been moved to 7:15.

NEXT THREE SUNDAYS:

12/29 @ 8:00 A.M.:  MACKERRICHER STATE PARK.

1/5/14 @8:00 A.M.,  RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK.

1/12/14 @ 8:00 A.M., CASPAR LOGGING ROAD
(parking area #3).  For all three runs, see "Our Routes" above.

Hare Creek, JSF Road 400

"Just as you write down other important appointments, you need to literally pencil in time for your run.  The process is empowering.  In the few seconds it takes to scribble "run" into a time slot, you make running a part of your life."-- Jeff Galloway
Mendocino Bay, J. Loomis
Gravel Pit Road, J. Loomis

It was another brisk, 35 degree, but clear morning along the coast.  We ran and walked Jackson State Forest Road 400, where the sun probably doesn't shine ever in the winter and the road is covered with loose rock that I heard described as marbles.  What's not to like about that!

Actually, we all had fun and it was really neat because another new person, Donna, joined with us.  Thanks, Barbara, for bringing her along.  Also present this morning:  Cindy, Jim and grandson Benjamin, John (thank you for the photos!), Rod, Charlene, Ron, Geri, Fran, Dorothy, Nancy B., Rick, Toni, Joe, Faye, Zelda, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (22).

As Roger said last week, about half the reason for getting up this morning, would be to eat breakfast.  Eat we did, just as at all of our Fog Dodger potlucks, we had plenty of delicious food and for a bonus, we had our annual cookie exchange.  It was a fun morning and now we must walk or run another mile to burn a few calories.

Jackson State Forest, Road 450

Every mile is two in winter.
    - George Herbert (1593 - 1633)

Good day to be wearing your parka.  Not like Bob who was sporting some fine bare legs.  Brrrrr. It was 30 deg  - what "we" would call Brass Monkey weather.  For those that aren't British - click here for more information.

However, there was no wind and it was just a beautiful, crisp morning.  On the return journey, I think everyone had removed hats, gloves, coats.....but  the cars were still covered in frost when we returned.

To enjoy today's weather and fine company were, Bob, Fran, Fay, Greg, Ron, Charlene, Toni, Joe, Neil, Barbara, Roger, Nancy and of course John, who once again arrived while some of us were still sleeping, to get these fine photos.

Don't forget next week is the annual Pot Luck and cookie exchange at Tom & Nancy's house.  For those that don't know where that is, here's the address - 31491 Camille Dr - click here for map .  I chose "Gravel Pit" or JSF Road 400 for the next walk, I know it's not the most popular, but it's close to Tom's house, which really will be the main reason for getting up next Sunday.
NEXT SUNDAY, DATE @ 8:00 A.M.: HARE CREEK, JACKSON STATE FOREST ROAD 400 - see 'Our Route's above
EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

The In-Between (Small Bus. Sat. & Cyber Monday) Run/Walk

It was a beautiful Fall morning around the Caspar Creek watershed.  Clear blue skies and about 40 degrees with no wind, seemed to work for everybody.  Some went uphill and some went downhill at the start and all seemed happy and talkative.

Applesauce time, J. Loomis
Present today, at least to the best of my memory and eyesight were:  Suzi, Fran, Barbara, Gay, Mark, Nancy T., Roger, Bob, Joel, John, Tom T., Linda, Charlene, Ron, Geri, Melissa, Nichole, Cheryl, Greg, Nancy and Tom (21).

Yes, in just two weeks (12/15), we will have our annual (I think?) Christmas Potluck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  You can bring any kind of breakfast dish that you'd like, or a beverage, hot or cold.  We'll have an oven and microwave if you need to re-warm something.  Cookies are great and make for a great exchange thing, if you want to participate.  You bring a plate full of cookies, leave those here for others and take home a plate full of mixed cookies that others have brought.  One very important rule though, don't leave any cookies behind when you leave!  Someone around here has no will power!

It will be at Nancy and Tom's this year.  If you don't know the way, just try to follow someone, or ask me while at the run/walk.  Roger is going to pick the location to meet for the walk/run.  We will supply the service ware, coffee, tea, champagne, orange juice and mimosas.

NEXT SUNDAY, DEC. 8TH @ 8:00 A.M.: JACKSON STATE FOREST, ROAD 450, about two miles east, going up Simpson Lane.  See "Our Routes" above.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

4th Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run/Walk

"In a world that's quickly becoming so fast-paced that multi-tasking is a way of life, runners have managed to find a way to do something that's good for our heads, bodies, and  spirits, and that provides wonderful social interaction." -- John Bingham

Mushroom Island, Van Damme's Fern Canyon, J. Loomis
Congratulations to Johnny, Nancy, Geri and Sonia!  They were the overall divisional (Men's Running, Women's Running, Women's Walking, and Children under 12) winners today in our Fourth Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run/Walk.   It was cold (38), clear and fortunately, calm, this morning, much improved over last year.

It was fun.  It benefitted the Food Bank.  It would have been much more fun and been much more of a benefit to the Food Bank, with a better turnout.  Present were:  Johnny, Bob, John, Melissa, Sonia, Nichole, Geri, Nancy and Tom (9).

Try to save December 15th for our Annual Christmas Potluck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  It will be at Nancy and Tom's this year.

Big River Logging Road

"All that running and exercise can do for you is make you healthy."-- Denny McLain, two-time Cy Young award winner for the Detroit Tigers

Big River, near the boat launch, J. Loomis
Our intrepid photographer, John, went out real early this morning, in an attempt to catch the full moon setting and the sun rising.  It was really cold and some fog developed, ends up that he couldn't get a good photo of either.   As always though, John did find a few subjects to photograph.  Thank you very much, John.

It was breezy and a brisk 42 degrees, while we waited for the big hand to make it to 12, while the little hand pointed at 8.  Hard to hold everyone back when it's like that.  We  were all anxious to get moving.  Once we got warmed up or were coming back west with the breeze, it was warmer and absolutely beautiful.  Several commented on the wonderful weather we've been having.  Thanks to Roger and Nancy for bringing a guest, Ellen.  I didn't get a chance to talk with Ellen, so I'm not sure if she lives locally and will be joining us again, I hope so.

Others present today were:  Fran, Dorothy, Gay, Mark, Cheryl N.,  Neil, Bob, John, Kathy, Steve, Cheryl, Rod, Bob J.,  Nancy B., Rick, Tom T., Fay, Toni, Joe, Charlene, Ron, Geri, Barbara, Nancy and Tom (28).  I feel like I left someone out?

Next Sunday, we will do have our Fourth Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run/Walk.  Meet in front of Harvest Market and be ready to go at 8:00.   You buy an item of food for the Food Bank and drop it in the bin there and then head to Safeway, buy another food item and drop it in their bin, then head to Purity if you're a runner or back to Harvest if you're walking.  You finish up by buying one last item at Harvest Market and putting it into their Food Bank bin.   These food items needn't cost much, just whatever you'd like to donate to the Food Bank.  Save your receipts, they are deductible on tax day.  It's a fun run/walk, hopefully the weather will be better this year.

Also, coming up on Dec. 15th or 22nd, I think we will be having a Christmas Potluck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  Standby for confirmation and details.

Russian Gulch addendum

I usually don't have much to say for the blog and so I really appreciate the photos that John takes.  They  make the blog seem so much better.  Well, today, after I posted the blog, along with John's photos, I received some additional pictures taken by Rick B.   Because I feel the photos are so important to the blog, I want to post them now, while they're still timely.  Plus, I think they are really nice photos.  Thank you Rick and thanks to everyone for coming out today.  Here's a few of those attending:

What a beautiful morning!  Everybody is talking about the weather.  It's the middle of November!   Through the campground and for the early part of the Fern Canyon Trail, the leaves are turning and covering the trail.  At home here, the bucks are chasing the does and John photographed a beautiful buck this morning!

We met at Russian Gulch this morning.  I was happy to see two new people, Fay, I've known for many years, and Joe.  Also present were:  Charlene, Ron, Orah, Steve, Hector, Shari, Peter, Toni, Joe, Geri, Joel, John, Nichole, Melissa, Bob, Fran, Dorothy, Nancy B., Rick,  Rod, Barbara, Zelda, Greg, Nancy and Tom (27).

MacKerricher Haul Road

"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put in to it."
  --Oprah Winfrey

Luckily, we all got to stay in bed an extra hour last night, all but one anyway.  It seems like each year, one of us will get caught not setting the clock forward or back.  Anyway, I say luckily got to stay home an extra hour because it was brisk enough at 8:00, it was nice to have a little sun.  We were at MacKerricher State Park and when it's windy, there's no hiding from it on the Haul Road.  It was a very cold and windy 50 degrees and we were all anxious to get started.

Thanks to John L. for today's photos.   One was taken on Halloween, the other three this morning.  See if you can figure it out.  Remember, you can click on any photo and see it full size.

Out for the walk or run this morning were:  Joel, Zelda, Barbara, Gay, Mark, Nancy B., Rick, Geri, Suzanne, Henry, Tonita, John, Rod, Ken, Toni, Joe, Bob J., Shari, Peter, Fran, Nancy and Tom (22).

Caspar Creek Logging Roads

"I act my age better than she does.  And I wash the dishes." ---  Carl Lindgren, Mavis Lindgren's husband, after Mavis completed the 1986 New York Marathon at age 86.
It was a cold (42) and foggy morning on the coast, John sent in the proof.  Thanks, John.  And, because Halloween is in four days, John thought his "lobster dog" was appropriate.   We ran and walked on the Caspar Creek logging roads today,  Jackson State Forest Roads 500 and 600.

I love Sunday mornings when new people show up at Fog Dodgers.  This morning, Barbara brought a friend and first timer, Zelda.  Welcome Zelda!  And, it was nice to see Megan back.  Others present today were:  Charlene, Ron, Richard, Philip, John, Joel, Mark, Greg, Toni, Joe, Geri, Tom T., Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (19).

The circus is in town!

It's been a very long time without any measurable rain.  Looking at the extended forecast, there is a small chance of showers next weekend.  (Have we ever seen a weather service/person accurately predict weather more than a couple of days ahead?)  I don't think so.  In any case, next Sunday we'll take a chance, and do our run/walk at MacKerricher State Park, exposed to the elements.

Van Damme State Park's Fern Canyon

"My feeling is that any day I am too busy to run is a day that I am too busy." --John Bryant, deputy editor of the London Times, 1994

We walked and ran at Van Damme State Park today.  lt was 45 degrees but Rod and I thought that it was freezing, running along with our hands in our pockets, it took forever to warm up.  Must be the humidity?  I brought along two friends that are visiting here, Nancy and Steve.  Others present today were:  Charlene, Fran, Dorothy, Rod, John, Cheryl, Toni, Joe, Greg, Gay, Mark, Geri, Tom T. and myself (16).  Sure seemed like more than 16, so if I left your name out, I am sorry.  I sometimes get so distracted.

As always, thanks John, for the nice photos.   Other than it being a very cold start this morning, Fern Canyon was beautiful and looking very Fall-like.

"The 'talk test' was the greatest news I'd heard since I found out it was okay to eat pasta:  If you're out of breath, slow down.  What a great deal!"-- George "Norm from 'Cheers' Wendt, actor

We met at Jackson State Forest,  Road 400,  this morning.   The road had been recently graded, not sure if that made the loose rocks better or worse.  It was a brisk 40 degrees and we had a nice turnout of friends.   Present were:  Fran, Dorothy, Barbara, Ron, Nancy T., Roger, Neil, Shari, Peter, Nancy B., Rick, Ginny, Terry, Joel, John , Toni, Joe, Gay, Mark, Geri, Nancy and Tom (22).

Russian Gulch

“My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She's ninety-seven now, and we don't know where the heck she is.”
               ― Ellen DeGeneres

Well another lovely day on our beautiful coast. Unfortunately Tom is attending to some family business, so today's blog was graciously handed to me by Nancy!

Although the temperature was only 49° when we set off, for those of us that walked the headland route, the sun and warm wind made it quite toasty.  We had another good turnout - and why not with such glorious weather.  It was great to have Kim join us again, visiting us from her new home in Colorado.

On a sad note, one of our walkers, Craig, died yesterday morning.  Our sympathy goes to his wife Kathleen.

Those of you that were there this morning, and who's name I managed to note were: Toni, Joe, Geri, Greg, Rick, Nancy B, Nancy R, Terry, Chuck, Ron, Charlene, Melissa, John, Mark, Gay, Peter, Shari, Joel, Janis(a friend of ?) and of course or friend Kim.
Thanks as always to John for the photos.

And, there's a special request from Gay.  If you have any pint or half-pint canning jars you're not using - please contact her at 964-2176 or bring them to next Sundays  walk.

Big River Logging Road

"Start slowly, then taper off."  Walt Stack, racing advice

This morning, we met at Big River.  It was overcast and a "warm" 61 degrees.   The overnight rain made the air feel heavy and humid.

We had the pleasure of meeting another new person, Bob G.   Also present this morning:  Cheryl, Joel,  Melissa, Nichole, Ginny, Terry, Philip, John, Shari, Peter, Charlene,  Chuck, Geri, Nancy and Tom (16) and I think I'm missing someone here???

Thank you, John, for this morning's pictures.  John's photos are getting better all the time!

For the Thursday runners, we are moving back to Van Damme State Park and hoping that the yellow jackets have gone dormant or whatever they do.

Caspar Logging Roads

"The difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry blank."  Dr. George Sheehan

I'm kind of sorry that summer is officially over today.  We've had so many great days this summer.  Today was another one of them, 50 degrees, sunny and calm.  We were at Caspar Creek Logging Roads and it was a beautiful morning.  Yesterday's rain had washed any dust from the ferns and forest and made the roads just perfect for walking and running.

Thanks to John, for sending the photos below, all taken around Caspar.   All of the photos are "clickable".

Present this morning:  Barbara, back for her second or third visit,  Geri, Cheryl, Neil, Shari, Peter, Gay, Mark, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Joel, John, Charlene, Ron, Craig, Greg, Toni, Joe, Tom T., Nancy and Tom (23).

"There is no doubt that 'Sport For All' is a 20th-century movement of real significance.  Other mass movements have oppressed where they intended to liberate.  This movement liberates because it has an essentially individual basis.  The choice of speed, route, distance or company is entirely yours."  __
                                                           Sir Roger Bannister

Probably some of our group went to the County Fair today.  They got to see apples, sheep and much, much more.  I know of at least two Fog Dodgers that were entering things and I wish the best to them.

John L. took  photos today of what those at the fair saw and also those of us at the run/walk got to see.

It was a spectacular morning!  60 degrees and calm, mostly sunny and crystal clear skies.  The ocean was calm and a deep blue with a scattering of salmon trollers in close to shore.  Mornings don't get much prettier!
