The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

Pomo Bluffs - Noyo Bay

I guess it was a typical winter morning, a little too cold for most of us.  It was a brisk 39 degrees, under clear and beautiful blue skies.

J. Loomis photo, as are all of the photos in today's blog.
Thank you, John, for all of today's photos.  Besides John, also present today were:  Zelda, Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Shari, Peter, Geri, Ron, Cheryl N., Neil, Fran, Toni, Joe,  Nina, Jan, Gay, Mark, Nancy and Tom (21).

Last night, some of our group enjoyed the Knights of Columbus annual crab dinner.

Forecasts for later this week call for several rainy days.  I think next weeks venue will be fine.  I'm still waiting for Russian Gulch and Van Damme to dry out a little before we go test those.  If you have a favorite venue, or want to add a new one, please let me know.  Remember though, it must be suitable for all, not too far away and have adequate parking.

WARD AVENUE

What a beautiful morning!  Fortunately for us, we walked and ran in between showers.  For us, the sky was about 50% clear blue, and about %50 fluffy white cumulous clouds.  It was somewhere just south of 50 degrees, just right for running and walking!  The ocean, with large breakers, was spectacular!

Thank you Bill and Jordan, for bringing a new walker, John.  Hopefully he enjoyed the morning and will return.  John recently became a full time local!

Also present today:  Shari, Nancy T., Roger, Zelda, Nancy B., Rick, Neil, Toni, Joe, Jan, John, Susan, Bruce, Gay and Mark (walked at Point Cabrillo due to my editing the venues!), Nancy and Tom (17).   I told Zelda she gets extra credit today, for showing up even though her power is out.

The rains and stormy seas have really done a number on MacKerricher Beach and Lake Cleone.  A couple of feet of sand now covers Mill Creek Drive and much of the berm (former railroad!)  separating Lake Cleone from the ocean, has been washed away.  State Park's wish, of bringing back an estuary and doing away with the lake may have been realized.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

A big change from last Sunday.  Last week we had a pretty good storm.  Many were without power and there was quite a lot of property damage.  Thanks to PG&E, working all hours of the day and night, power has been restored to most.  John snapped this picture of the workers at his driveway.
Thank you, PG&E.  I think we all have our power back now.
This morning, it was 39 degrees under clear and calm skies.  We walked and ran on Jackson State Forest Roads, 500 & 600.

Several nights this week we had  a beautiful full moon.   J. Loomis photo
Another strong winter storm front is due to arrive next Wednesday.  Hopefully, by Sunday, it will be nice enough to go for a walk or run at Ward Avenue.  We haven't done Ward Ave. for quite a while and thought that with rain in the forecast, it will at least be safe and not muddy.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

We would have run, really, and we had three walkers willing to go, really, but because of winds gusting up to 45 mph at the time, we decided it was too unsafe to venture in to Van Damme State Park.  Four of us went to breakfast instead.  Tony was trying to meet us for the breakfast but was blocked on her street by a fallen tree.

John has submitted a few pictures here.  I think they capture the day perfectly!  If it weren't raining so hard right now, I'd go out and take a picture of one of my large fir trees that had fallen right down the longitudinal axis of my neighbor's pickup truck!  Luckily, it missed where he was sleeping in a trailer less than 10 feet away!  Thanks for the pictures, John.

It's a little later as I edit this blog, I've got a picture of our neighbor's truck now:

Ouch!  Sorry.

I'm going to count this morning as if there had been a Fog Dodger Group Run/Walk, even though we didn't get too far out of our vehicles.  Breakfast out on Sunday has become a favorite for many of our group and we did at least make that.  So, there has still been a Group Run/Walk every Sunday since July 26, 1998.

Present this morning, and deserving extra credit, Joe, Nancy B., Jennifer, Jan, John, Nancy and Tom (7).

BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD

Happy New Year!  Well, we did it!  We at least got the New Year off to a good start.  Considering it was a holiday, and one on which many like to sleep in, or sleep it off, we had a good sized group of happy runners and walkers.

We haven't been to Russian Gulch or Van Damme State Park for quite awhile, mainly because of the trail conditions.  Next week we will try Van Damme State Park's Fern Canyon.  It used to be one of our favorite venues.  We'll see how it is now.  If you want to walk with your dog, you can't take it up Fern Canyon beyond the campground, but there is plenty of roadway if you go up to the upper campground.  It would be a very pretty walk also!
