The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

JSF ROAD 450

It was a good morning for running or walking in Jackson State Forest.  We met at Road 450 and it was about 54 degrees, overcast and no wind.  Only one runner, Bob, today, the rest of us were walkers.  We need more runners!

John is in San Francisco today but he still thought of us, wished he were here and sent the following picture that he took from his niece's place.  I'll let you birders tell me what kind of hawk it is, I don't know.

Present today: Pat, Leon, Kim, Doug, Fran, Jean, Charlene, Diana, Jeff, Joe, Deb, Sam, Bob, Shari, Nancy and Tom (16).

From the internet, I poached the following cartoon:

I had chosen Caspar Logging Road for next week but just now read (8/30) that JSF now has locked gates at both ends (east and west) of the Caspar Logging Road.  I've now decided to meet on Heeser Drive in Mendocino.  It's a good road for walking, running and biking.

I hope we all stay well and I hope to see you next week at:

SUNDAY, SEPT. 5TH @ 8:OO A.M., GROUP RUN, WALK AND BIKE, MENDOCINO HEADLANDS AND TOWN,  You can always click on the "Our Routes" button at the top of the page.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN/WALK @ 7:30 A.M.:  Beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.

POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE

Point Cabrillo Light Station, early morning, J. Loomis photo

John couldn't make it this morning but has given me some Point Cabrillo photos  from the archives.  Thank you, John!

It was a good morning for walking and biking, overcast and about 54 degrees, light winds.

Present today: Shari, Fran, Toni, Joe, Diana, Jeff, Deb, Sam, Jean, Barbara, Pat, Leon, Charlene, Kim, Doug, Susan, Bruce, Nancy and Tom (19).

By request, next week we'll meet at Jackson State Forest Road 450, where it begins at Simpson Lane.  When the trail conditions are just right, this can be a fun, but challenging, bike ride.  This late in the summer though, I think there will be quite a few sand pits.  It will be good for hiking.  I hope to see you there.

SUNDAY, AUG. 29 @ 8:OO A.M., GROUP RUN, WALK AND BIKE, JSF ROAD 450, at the round about, go east 1.9 miles.  You can always click on the "Our Routes" button at the top of the page.  Conditions on Rd. 450  right now would probably not be good for bikes, too sandy.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN/WALK @ 7:30 A.M.:  Beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.

POMO BLUFFS PARK

A little trivia for you:  Deb coined the name "Fog Dodgers", back in 1998, when we had our first Group Run.  Sam came up with the drawing for the logo.  Deb, myself, and three others met for our first Group Run on 7/26/1998 and there's been a Fog Dodger Sunday every single Sunday since then (one done virtually near home for Covid last year).  Thanks Deb and Sam.

Today, we did dodge the fog, easily.  It was a beautiful morning, 55 degrees, sunny and almost calm.

John couldn't make it today but fortunately, I have some of his photos saved, thanks John.

Present today:  Shari, Toni, Joe, Kim, Doug, Jean, Charlene, Pat, Leon, Deb, Sam, Diana, Jeff, Nancy and Tom (15).

It's had better days.  A sad ending to what was once a fine fishing vessel.

John sent me a few pictures after I had posted the blog.  His pictures have always helped the blog so much, I've just got to squeeze a couple more in here.  Thanks again, John.

Back on June 20, two months ago, we met at the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse.  I think most of us enjoyed that, and by request, next week we'll try it again.  It's good for running, walking and biking, easy parking and dog friendly.  Hope to see you there.   In two weeks, again by request, we'll meet at Jackson State Forest Road 450, (off of Simpson Lane).

SUNDAY, AUG. 22 @ 8:OO A.M., GROUP RUN, WALK AND BIKE,  POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE, this one is not listed  in "Our Routes" but our starting point is the parking lot above the lighthouse, right on Point Cabrillo Drive.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN/WALK @ 7:30 A.M.:  Beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.

COASTAL TRAIL - NORTH

I think this was one of our warmest Sunday mornings lately.  It was sunny and about 55 degrees but it seemed warmer, maybe because there was no fog and only a slight breeze.

John couldn't make it this morning but did send me some photos.  Without his photos, the blog would be pretty boring.  Thank you, John.

Present today: Shari, Toni, Joe, Deb, Sam, Pat, Leon, Susan, Bruce, Diana, Jeff, Charlene, Jean, Toni, Joe, Shari, Peter, Nancy and Tom (19).

                                                                             Egret

                                                           Melon in John's greenhouse

                                                                      Sunflowers
It seems like we keep going to the same places over and over, I guess we do.  If there are any other venues that are good for all of us, running, walking and biking, and that have parking and are not too far away, let me know.  Right now, the mosquitoes are keeping us away from Big River and it always worked well for most.

It's been six weeks (seems much more recent) since we started from Pomo Bluffs Park, so next week, that's where we'll be.  You can walk down to Hare Creek Beach or go across the Noyo Bridge and out to Johnson Rock on the Coastal Trail, or go around and around, your choice!  Hope to see you there.

SUNDAY, AUG. 15 @ 8:OO A.M., GROUP RUN, WALK AND BIKE,  POMO BLUFFS PARK, (You can always click on "Our Routes" at the top of the page to find out more about our venue and where to park.)

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN/WALK @ 7:30 A.M.:  Beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.

MENDOCINO, HEESER DRIVE AND TOWN

A real good morning for running, walking or biking.  I think this was the first morning ever though, that we didn't have any runners, they were either absent or on the injured list.  The weather was overcast but calm and I think it was about 53 degrees.   The ocean was flat and salmon fishing boats were scattered about.

Thanks John, for all of today's photos.

I was running a little late this morning and the group would not start without me.  So, we started two minutes late, and survived.  If I miss anyone's name that was present, that's my alibi.  Present today: John, Shari, Jean, Fran, Gay, Mark, Pat, Leon, Deb, Sam, Joe, Charlene, Nancy and Tom (14).
