The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

LAKE CLEONE

J. Loomis photo
Happy New Year to all.  This morning, we met at Lake Cleone.  I think that everyone, both runners and hikers chose to go south, mostly on the Haul Road.  Joel ran the single track along the bluff.  It was nice this morning, about 49  degrees, I've forgotten now for sure.  The ocean and clouds were beautiful!

Out to enjoy the last morning of the year:  Steve and his daughter, Jodie, (thanks Steve), Zelda, Cheryl N., Neil, Shari, Peter, Jan, Joel, Nancy T., Roger, John, Nancy and Tom.  We met Toni for breakfast at David's (15).

I've got a bit of good news, Big River Road is again open!  We'll go there often, as long as the mosquitoes are still sleeping.  This week, the Mid-week Fog Dodgers will check it out on Tuesday.  Soon also, I think, the two halves of our new Coastal Trail should be connected and that will give many options out there.  Things are looking better!

Invite your friends to join us.  We will always enjoy more members, especially runners.

Sunday, Jan. 7th, Group Run and Walk, POMO BLUFFS - HARE CREEK (see "Our Routes" above)

Sunday, Jan. 8th Upper Russian Gulch State Park, beginning on Road 409, 3.2 miles east of Hwy One.  It is right where the paved road ends and there is a sign that says, "Horse Camp".

Sunday, Jan. 15th, Big River

NEXT SUNDAY,  JAN. 7TH, GROUP RUN AND WALK, POMO BLUFFS - HARE CREEK - NOYO BAY, beginning at the Pomo Bluffs Parking Lot.
depending upon how fast you go, there's many options built into this one.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: This Tuesday (Jan. 2), we will return to Big River and check out how this one is.   On Thursday (Jan. 4th), we will run at Mendocino, beginning at the Heeser Dr. restrooms.

POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE and CASPAR UPLAND TRAIL

Merry Christmas everybody!  A lot of the Fog Dodgers are away visiting family.  Present today:  Zelda, Steve, Charlene, Ron, Nancy T., Roger, Jan, Bob, Nancy and Tom.  Afterwards, we went to David's for breakfast and were joined by Toni, Geri and Rick (13).

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, J. Loomis photo
This run/walk today, was kind of a test.  It was the first time for this venue and we didn't know how it would work out, time and distance-wise.   I think it worked out well for both walking and running.  Now, if it gets wetter, the runners may have problems, as part of the trail gets pretty flooded.  For running, the whole loop came out to 3.78 miles, with almost 400' of ascent.  It's a good loop!

Greetings from John

Skip Brand owns the Healdsburg Running Company.  It's a great little shoe store and they sponsor many races, runs and other activities.  At each event, they try to photograph some or all of the people that were present.   It has been suggested by several, to include some "people pictures" on our blog and that would make it more interesting, I agree.  We will try to do that.  Today's photos came out kind of fuzzy so we'll work on it.  There was this one that could be used.  Would anyone like to be "the people" photographer?  It almost has to be one of the walkers, as the runners all have to take off at exactly 8:00 and John already has done his volunteer photography long before that.

Sunday, Dec. 31st, Group Run and Walk,  Lake Cleone, starting right in the parking lot at Lake Cleone, MacKerricher State Park.  You can run/walk from there in all directions.

NEXT SUNDAY,  DEC. 31st, GROUP RUN AND WALK, Lake Cleone, beginning at the Parking Lot.

MENDOCINO HEADLANDS AND TOWN

It was a beautiful morning!  At our start, it was 42 degrees, but with lower humidity than normal and crystal clear blue skies, very pleasant.  The ocean was all stirred up and beautiful too!

Mendocino water tower, J. Loomis photo
Thanks to John, for today's photos.  It's nice, to run around the town of Mendocino, as there are so many interesting sights.  No "cookie cutter" homes in this town!  And the views around Heeser Drive and the Mendocino Headlands are unbeatable!

Present today:  Shari, Peter, Cheryl N., Neil, Nancy T., Roger, Zelda, Charlene, Gay, Mark, Joel, Jan, Bob, John, Nancy and Tom.  We joined Geri and Toni at David's Restaurant for breakfast (18).

Mendocino Christmas Spirit, J. Loomis photo
There are a couple of new venues coming up, Point Cabrillo and Upper Russian Gulch.  They should be fun!  They've been recommended and it will be up to us, to see if they can be made part of our regular routes.  A COUPLE OF CHANGES BELOW!

Sunday, Dec. 24th, Group Run and Walk, Point Cabrillo Lighthouse (A new and suggested route).

Sunday, Dec. 31st, Group Run and Walk,  Lake Cleone, starting right in the parking lot at Lake Cleone, MacKerricher State Park.  You can run/walk from there in all directions.

Sunday, Jan. 7th, Group Run and Walk, POMO BLUFFS - HARE CREEK (see "Our Routes" above)

Sunday, Jan. 8th Upper Russian Gulch State Park, beginning on Road 409, about 3 miles east of Hwy One.

NEXT SUNDAY,  DEC. 24TH, GROUP RUN AND WALK, POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE.  This one, is not in "Our Routes" above and we've never done it.  We will check it out and improvise. I'm putting it in now because  of the dry weather we have had.  The grass here can become very wet and spongy.  Parking/starting, is in the Parking Lot at the top of Lighthouse Road.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.,  MENDOCINO, starting at the Heeser Drive restrooms.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

We ran and walked the Caspar Logging Road (Jackson State Forest Rd. 500).  It was chilly, 39, when we started but after warming up, it felt just right.  It was a beautiful morning.

Caspar Bay

We followed our run/walk with our Annual Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  Since some could make the run/walk but not breakfast or breakfast but not the run/walk, I'll just list all names that were present today.  There was:  Dorothy, Fran, Jim, Gay, Mark, Bob, Cheryl, John, Charlene, Ron, Toni, Zelda, Nancy B., Rick, Shari, Peter, Nicole, Noah, Reya, Serena, Nancy, Tom (22).

Caspar Robin

The Fog Dodgers had a wonderful breakfast at Mark and Gay's today.  Nicole brought Noah and the kids, Reya and Serena.  It was really fun to have the kids experience the Fairy Tree House and Giant Swing.  Actually, not just the kids but all of us enjoyed it!  Thank you very much, Mark and Gay, for a great morning!

Caspar Llama, thanks, John, for all of today's photos.
Next week, we will run and walk at Mendocino.  We tried this once before and it was well received.  On this one, you can run/walk along the bluff-top single track, all around the headlands, or you can run/walk on Heeser Drive and if you're running, we usually cover most of the town's through streets.  What you make of it, is completely up to you!

We've become a group of "old" people. Sorry folks, and yes, I'm one of them.  We started out 20 years ago as a running group of middle aged and have just evolved.  It was very nice to have Nicole with us today and her family.  I've encouraged her to invite some of her friends that run and I'd like for everyone, to try to invite anyone, especially younger folks, to join us.  It would make us a much better group.  I will try putting up an invite on the C.V. Starr bulletin board, maybe get some of those folks off of the treadmills and onto the trails!

Sunday, Dec. 24th, Group Run and Walk,  Lake Cleone, starting right in the parking lot at Lake Cleone, MacKerricher State Park.  You can run/walk from there in all directions.

Sunday, Dec. 31st, Group Run and Walk, POMO BLUFFS - HARE CREEK (see "Our Routes" above)

NEXT SUNDAY, SUNDAY DEC. 17TH @ 8:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO HEADLANDS AND AROUND THE TOWN.  MEET AT THE HEESER DRIVE RESTROOMS. You can read more about this venue two paragraphs above.

Roger has updated "Our Routes" at the top of the page, thanks Roger!  When you look and see how many different options we have, you wonder why we keep doing the same ones over and over.  Well, there are little glitches with each route and I tend to pick whatever seems to please most of us.  Be sure to let me know if there's one that you want to try again.   Roger has all of the maps looking really good  and it will help us all get to the right starting points.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO HEADLANDS AND TOWN.  These mid-week runs beging at the restrooms on Heeser Dr.

TEN MILE RIVER LOGGING ROAD

Pink Clouds off Ten Mile Beach

It was 40 degrees and the slight breeze made it seem much colder.  It was impossible to keep most everyone from jumping the gun at 7:58.  Mark held back a moment, to make sure nobody arrived just before our 8:00 a.m. start, thanks Mark!  That always seems to happen when it's cold and breezy.

Ten Mile Farm House

It had been almost two years since we last ran and walked at Ten Mile River.  It's still as pretty and nice as ever.  I timed the difference between Ward Avenue and Ten Mile River this morning, only six minutes, so hopefully we will do Ten Mile more often.  Don't tell me it's too far!

Thanks to John, for all of this morning's beautiful pictures.

"Ten Mile Mystery Home"

Present today, a small group:  Zelda, Gay, Mark, Charlene, Ron, Joel, Jan, John, Nancy and Tom (10).  Afterwards, four of us met with Toni and had a great David's breakfast.

Following our run/walk next week, we'll have our Annual Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  It will be at Mark and Gay's beautiful home and I have been told that the Gnome Tree House will be open.  You should really try to make this one, even bring your family, it's a very nice event.  The "only rule",
is that if you want to participate in the Cookie
Exchange, you must also take home a plate of
cookies.  Mark and Gay don't want too many
left overs!  Gay will be providing steel cut oat-
meal and a waffle bar, you may bring anything
breakfast related you'd like.

South Fork Ten Mile River

If you haven't been to Mark and Gay's, you can follow one of the others or ask me for the address.  It's close by.

NEXT SUNDAY, DEC. 10TH @ 8:00 A.M. CASPAR LOGGING ROADS.  OUR ANNUAL POT LUCK BREAKFAST AND COOKIE EXCHANGE FOLLOWS IMMEDIATELY AFTER.

Today, Shari suggested a couple of trails around the Pt. Cabrillo area and I'll look into those.  Anyway, Roger has all of the maps looking really good  and it will help us all get to the right starting points.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO, beginning at the Heeser Drive restrooms.

NOYO COASTAL HEADLANDS TRAIL - NORTH

An incredibly beautiful ocean this morning!  Unfortunately, what it took to make it so beautiful, was a 20 - 25 mph southerly wind and accompanying drizzle.  There were very large waves breaking and the wind was blowing their tops off, very pretty!  We chose to start out going into the wind, since the drizzle was light at the moment.  Coming back with the wind was actually quite nice.  Another out and back to the north along the Haul Road, just seemed to make the wind and drizzle a little harder and wetter!  It all made for a great breakfast at David's for 10 us.

After fooling around with "Blogger" for 10 minutes or so, I give up!  It is really difficult sometimes, unless you are Roger, to arrange photos and captions on these blogs.  They just don't go where you want them to go!

John sent me these photos for the day and he titled one of them "Mr. Poppins" and the other, "Not Mary".  You get the idea, it was windy out there this morning.  The pretty bowl, is one that John found at an outdoor "art gallery" in the park at Lucerne, over in Lake County.

Present today:  Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Joe, Toni, Charlene, Ron, Zelda, Jan, John, Nancy and Tom (13).

Hard to believe but it has been almost two years since we last ran and walked at Ten Mile River.  It'a drive that's just a few miles further than Ward Avenue or Lake Cleone and I hope the distance doesn't discourage you.  By request (and I like it also) we're going there next week.  It's a great road for everything!

Remember, we will have our Annual Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange on Dec. 10.  Read about it just below.

Sunday, Dec. 3rd, by request, Ten Mile River Logging  Road, (click on "Our Routes" above).

Sunday, Dec. 10th, Caspar Logging Roads (this day was previously scheduled for Big River but I'm not sure if construction there is completed).   We will have our 8th (at least) Annual Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  It will be at Mark and Gay's home and you can ask me for directions if you need them.  You don't want to miss this event!  You can bring any kind of dish that could be interpreted as breakfast related, and a plate of cookies if you wish to participate in that exchange.  You must take home a plate!

8th Annual Bin2Bin2Bin

And for the runners, there were two more Bins, having to return from Purity Market, stopping once again at Safeway and ending up at Harvest Market.  Though we are not a large group, every little donation is welcomed by the Food Bank.

This morning, we did our annual good deed for the Food Bank.   It was 39 degrees chilly at our start but there wasn't any wind this year, so really, a pretty nice morning.  I always like going across the Noyo Bridge, but I do not like looking straight down!

Tom Turkey, J. Loomis photo

John was busy installing windows this morning but was kind enough to send us some photos.  Thanks, John!  Our blog would look naked and not very interesting without his photos.  He's been building a new house for himself and has done most of it single handed.

Walking and running for the Food Bank this morning:  Jan, Bob J., Bob C., Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Shari, Toni, Joe, Nancy and Tom (12).

John titled this photo, "Yesterday's conversation".  Something to think about.

PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

We ran and walked on the MacKerricher State Park Haul Road today.  It was a beautiful morning.  The ocean was flat calm and the sky was completely clouded with beautiful clouds.  It was 51 degrees and a slight breeze out of the south that gave us all a chill at the start.

Pudding Creek Trestle, J. Loomis

John took some pictures for us.  Thank you, John!  Most of them are from his back yard.  The one above, of the Pudding Creek Trestle was taken on another day.  The clouds this morning were much more interesting and beautiful.  Most everyone commented on them.

Persimmon Time, J. Loomis
After our turn-around, Adriana, joined with us.  Ron had invited her yesterday.  Thanks to both of you!  Also present today:  Lucinda, Nancy B., Rick, Cheryl N., Neil, Shari, Peter, Nancy T., Roger, Toni, Joe, Bob, John, Charlene, Ron, Catherine, Nancy and Tom (19).

Next week's run/walk is a fun way to help out our Food Bank.  It started eight years ago, kind of like a race, but we've slowed and now it's just a fun and scenic (crossing the bridge) run and walk.  We follow it with an optional breakfast at David's.  I hope everyone can make it.

Sunday, November 19th, Bin 2 Bin 2 Bin Harvest Market Thanksgiving Run/Walk (We'll donate an item(s) of food to the Food Bank at each store).  Just bring a little cash with you, enough to buy something (beans, cereal, turkey, pasta, you name it) at each store.  They have Food Bank barrels or boxes at each store, so you don't have to walk/run around town lugging it.  We'll start in front of Harvest Market at 8:00.

Sunday, November 26th, Noyo Coastal Headlands Trail - North, from the Glass Beach parking lot.  Cheryl and Neil checked this morning and the two halves are not yet connected.  They are getting close to doing so though and it will be so nice when done.

Sunday, Dec. 3rd, by request, Ten Mile River Logging  Road, (click on "Our Routes" above).

Sunday, Dec. 10th, Caspar Logging Roads (this day was previously scheduled for Big River but I'm not sure if construction there is completed).  8th Annual Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  This year, it will again be at Mark and Gay's home.  If needed, ask me for the address or directions.

Anyway, Roger has all of the maps looking really good  and it will help us all get to the right starting points.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

This was our first winter-like morning this year.  Even so, it was 38 degrees at our start, and people from all around the country would laugh at us, if we complained about it.  It was also crystal clear and the ocean, clean, flat and deep blue.  A great morning for a run or for a walk.  John found that the frost this morning worked some magic on the church's stained glass windows.  He's always scouting for a photo to share.  Thank you, John, for all of this morning's photos!

Heart and Soul, J. Loomis photo
(what the frost did to the church windows)
Thanks to Gay and Mark, for bringing along Kay Ellen and Paul, for their second visit.  And to Jan, for inviting Liz, also for her second visit.   Others present today:  Charlene, Ron, Neil, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Catherine, David, Nancy T., Roger, Joe, John, Barbara, Bob, Shari, Peter, Nancy and Tom  (24).

Frosty morning, J. Loomis photo

It had been awhile since we last met at Van Damme.  I was kind of hoping that the trail would be better but it was just as we had last seen, not great but still a very pretty run or walk.

Next Sunday, we meet at the Pudding Creek Trestle.  From there, you can go either north or south.  Right now, the forecast for next Sunday says that there's a good chance of showers, so you can take off with the rain at your back, in any case, a good venue!
(ammended on 11/12/17, 5:00 a.,m., not going to rain and it will be 51 degrees, wind SE 8mph)

Sunday, November 12th, Pudding Creek Trestle

Sunday, November 19th, Bin 2 Bin 2 Bin, Harvest Market Thanksgiving Run/Walk (We'll donate a couple cans of food to the Food Bank at each store).  I hope that everyone can make this one.  It's always fun and though our contribution to the Food Bank is very small, it is very much appreciated.

Sunday, November 26th, Noyo Coastal Headlands Trail - North, from the Glass Beach parking lot.  Just checked this course out yesterday, Nov. 4th, and the two halves are not yet connected but I've heard from Roger, that they're getting close and it appeard so!  It will be so nice when done.  Also, Roger has updated "Our Routes" at the top of the page, thanks Roger!  He's done a great job and it will help us all get to the right starting points.

Sunday, Dec. 3rd, by request, Ten Mile River Logging  Road, (click on "Our Routes" above).

Sunday, Dec. 10th, Big River Logging Road (Yaaay!  It's open again and the mosquitoes gone at this time of the year.)

NEXT SUNDAY, NOV. 12TH @ 8:00 A.M.: PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO, beginning at the Heeser Drive restrooms.  At least for now, it won't be quite so dark.  We've been running lately with flashlights.

POMO BLUFFS - NOYO BAY

Thanks, John, for a couple of Halloween photos

Well, I kind of confused a few people, by throwing in way too many street names and directions but in the end, it all seemed to work out fine.  We were trying out a small deviation to our "regular" Pomo Bluffs run/walk.  I had recently tried for the first time, the Hare Creek Beach Access Trail and wanted everyone else to see how neat it was.  They liked it!

The Noyo Ghost, J. Loomis photo
Happy Halloween!

I think it was 52 degrees this morning and very foggy.  Got a good laugh out of a few people we passed on the Coastal Trail, when they read "Fog Dodgers" on Nancy's shirt.  It was a very thick fog and I'm not sure if we were dodging or just cutting through it.

Present today:  Gay, Mark, Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Toni, Shari, Peter, Cheryl N., Neil, Joel, Nicole, John, Nancy and Tom (16).

Coming up in three weeks, we do our 8th Annual Bin 2 Bin 2 Bin Run/Walk.  For any unfamiliar with this one, it simply starts at Harvest Market.  We run/walk into the store and buy a couple of items for the Fort Bragg Food Bank, drop them in their barrel there and go on to do the same at Safeway and Purity.  We finish by making a second trip into Harvest.  Runners can make all four stops easily in an hour and walkers three stops in the same time.

Sunday, November 5th, Van Damme State Park  (Remember the time change)

Sunday, November 12th, Pudding Creek Trestle

Sunday, November 19th, Bin 2 Bin 2 Bin, Harvest Market Thanksgiving Run/Walk (We'll donate a couple cans of food to the Food Bank at each store)

Sunday, November 26th, Noyo Coastal Headlands Trail - North, from the Glass Beach parking lot.  Hopefully,  the north and south halves of the trail are now connected.

5TH @ 8:00 A.M.,  VAN DAMME STATE PARK  (PACIFIC STANDARD TIME)

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO, beginning at the Heeser Drive restrooms.  This will be our last (for awhile) dark run.

MENDOCINO

Thanks, John, for all of today's photos.

Mendocino Masonic Building, J. Loomis photo
This morning, we tried a new (for most anyway) venue.  We ran and walked around the Mendocino Headlands and the town of Mendocino.  I haven't heard of any complaints and it was really a nice morning.  At our start, it was 52 degrees, calm and the nothing but blue skies, from now on.

The view from our starting point, looking north towards Pt. Cabrillo
Our neighbor, Nicole, showed up (second time) apologetically saying she hadn't run for six months due to an injury.  She then proceeded to take off, striding like only young people can, and right away ran me into the ground!  Nancy was able to keep up though and it's what Nancy has been needing, someone to keep her from slowing down.  Thanks, Nicole!

Others present this morning: Zelda, Gay, Mark, Cheryl N., Neil, Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Joe, Charlene, Ron, John, Nancy and Tom (16).

A staple post.  J. Loomis photo
Another of John's interesting photos.  He has an eye for neat things!
We will soon have the option of going to the Big River Haul Road again.  In the meantime, a couple of our other venues have been ammended, giving us more opportunities, avoiding too many frequent repeats.

Sunday, October 29th, Pomo Bluffs - Noyo Bay (this week I am suggesting that it's possible
to start off going south and checking out the Hare Creek Beach Access Trail (it's over south of or behind the college), looping around and back to the college and then proceeding to the Noyo Bridge and Coastal Trail.)  I did this recently and found it a nice variation. (S. on Ocean View Dr. > Pacific Dr. > Bay View Ave. > Harbor Ave. and over the Noyo Bridge).

Sunday, November 5th, Van Damme State Park

Sunday, November 12th, Pudding Creek Trestle

Sunday, November 19th, Bin 2 Bin 2 Bin, Harvest Market Thanksgiving Run/Walk

Sunday, November 26th, Noyo Coastal Headlands Trail - North, from the Glass Beach parking lot.  Hopefully,  the north and south halves of the trail are now connected.

Sunday, Dec. 3rd, by request, Ten Mile River Logging  Road, (click on "Our Routes" above).

Sunday, Dec. 10th, Big River Logging Road

NEXT SUNDAY, OCT. 29TH @ 8:00 A.M., POMO BLUFFS - NOYO BAY.  Besides doing our regular route, see the suggestion above.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: MENDOCINO, beginning at the Heeser Drive restrooms.
