The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

Noyo Headland Park - North

Well, Rick and I failed to closely check the hike location for today and ended up waiting at Noyo Headlands Park - South. It didn't take too long to figure out we were at the wrong place and drove further north to the right location. I ran ahead to catch up with our group. We missed Roger, Nancy and Abby today.

It was a foggy morning, which is usual during this time of year. I didn't get the complete list of runners and walkers this morning but I did get a count of eleven walkers and two runners.

Seven of us enjoyed breakfast at David's. The conversation at breakfast included mushrooms coming up a bit early, and the new Immediate Care Facility, located in the North Coast Family Health Center, that Suzanne Hewitt is managing. Rick had very happy experience with her the other day and Henry is happy that Suzanne doesn't have to commute to Ukiah any more!

The sun didn't come out at all, but the wind was down and some of us walked all across the Trestle Bridge and then returned.  Missed Tom and Nancy. Looking forward to seeing you next Sunday!

Abby's farewell

It was a sad morning.  Instead of bringing Abby to the highlight of her week, a walk with her favorite group of people, we had to put her to rest.

Earlier this week we think she had a minor stroke.  During the week she found it progressively more difficult to get her body to do what her mind wanted.

The cute look
Her favorite place - on the beach
I know Abby would like to thank all her friends in the Fog Dodgers that have given her so much attention, cookies and rubs over the last 6 years of her being an enthusiastic member of the group.

Enjoying Abby's version of a swim
Checking out Big River
Guarding her kingdom

We've posted just a few of the many, many of her photos.  She loved Fort Bragg and especially the beach and the water.  We did tell her that we were sure the group sent their best wishes, as she passed on to pastures new.

Thank you all for being so kind to Abby.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

Foggy morning, Fern Drive, J. Loomis photo

We brought our friends, Renee and Larry, along today.  We are RV friends and they are just passing through on their way to Washington.  Also visiting was our "old" Fog Dodger friend, Kim, and her daughter, Adeline, and Adeline's friend, Carmen.  So, it was nice that we had a nice turnout with so many friendly people.  I think our guests had a nice run or walk.  Also present, Chandra, Laura, Jan, Charlene, Ron, Tom T., Bill, Zelda, Nancy T., Roger, John, Susan, Bruce, Nancy and Tom (20).

Hangin' out in backyard safety on opening weekend

It was a good morning for walking and running, 52 degrees, overcast and calm.  We were on Jackson State Forest Road 500 and I was surprised to see only one vehicle pass by us.  This, I think, is the opening weekend of deer season and on opening weekends, we usually see a number of pickups.  Anyway, it was a good morning!

We topped off the morning by having breakfast at David's, where we wished Simone well.  She is heading off to college now and we will miss her.  Kira will certainly miss her little girl.

Chandra mentioned today, that she would like to help the Fog Dodgers by doing a Facebook page.  I hope this happens and that it can bring in more runners, walkers and younger people.  The more people that show, the more likely that there will be someone that walks or runs about the same pace that you do.  We really do need more young runners and walkers.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21ST, TEN MILE RIVER LOGGING ROAD, blackberries should still be plentiful.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 28TH, NOYO HEADLANDS PARK - NORTH, parking lot near Glass Beach.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH, NOYO HEADLANDS PARK- SOUTH, parking lot west of Taco Bell.

NEXT SUNDAY, AUGUST 21st @ 8:00 A.M.: TEN MILE RIVER LOGGING ROAD, (see Our Routes above).  There should be blackberries to pick if you'd like to, not real sure because last year the edges of the roadway were "weed-whacked" really good.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD.

WARD AVENUE

Coast Guard rescue!  J. Loomis photo

It's a beautiful morning!  We met at Ward Avenue today and it was 50 degrees, sunny and calm at our 8:00 a.m. start.

Present today:  Joe, Neil, Bill, Zelda, Cindy, Jim, Charlene, Ron, Susan, Bruce, Nancy T., Roger, Gay, Mark, John, Jan, Rod, Tom, and Geri joined with us afterwards (19).

Thanks to John for today's photos.  I'm not sure where and when the Coast Guard rescue photo was taken but I'm sure those fishermen on the sea urchin boat are thankful for it!  They've come awfully close to a reef or the shore break!

We tried beach running today.  The last couple of times at Ward Ave., we stuck to the Haul Road because the dark beach sand was too soft for running.  Today, the fine grain and lighter colored sand had returned and made for much better running.

The ocean and sky were beautiful today, a perfect morning for a run or walk!
