The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

POINT CABRILLO LIGHTHOUSE

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, J. Loomis photo

A solid overcast this morning made for perfect walking conditions.  I think it was 57 degrees with no wind.  The ocean was very calm and we saw many flights of pelicans.  To top it all off, we were greeted to  some "singing" by coyotes just to the north of our parking lot at the conclusion of our walk.  I can't remember ever hearing coyotes around here, though I hear they're becoming common around our big cities.

After admiring the storm repair work on the lighthouse and watching the ocean for a few minutes we walked out to the small pond that is just a bit to the south.  I was able to show how old I am and how long I've been around by telling of how the Air Force personnel used to buy trout from the local trout farm and put them in the pond.  They then had their own private trout pond for fishing during their off hours.  The group said, "Air Force?"  Yeah, it's true, there used to be an Air Force facility on Point Cabrillo.  To keep this from becoming way too long of a blog post, I'm giving you a couple of links to Air Force history at Pt. Cabrillo.  If you've got a few minutes, you will find them interesting, I promise.

WARD AVENUE

We did have an interesting beach walk this morning at low tide, which is special since the sand is firm for walking and the shells are everywhere.  It was misty, foggy, and many birds accompanied us along the way playing in and out with the surf.  Seagulls, Pelicans, a stray Raven, and of course Sanderlings skittering up and down as the waves rolled in.

Present today:  Pat, Leon, Fran, Jean, Cindy, Shari, Toni, Greg, Charlene, Nancy, Tom and John (12).

COASTAL TRAIL - SOUTH

This Sunday a decent sized group of us walked along COASTAL TRAIL - SOUTH (TACO BELL). Hiking were Sky, Eric, Nancy, Tom, John, Charlene, Fran, Shari, Doug, Kim and Bowie, Joe (back from Long Island), and, back on her feet again, Jean!We even saw Bob running by the group headed south. A beautiful morning, cool and refreshing. It was really nice to see Jean again. The summer can thin out the group as many of us are traveling, but this Sunday most of us showed up.

Afterwards a small contingent of four went to David's Deli for breakfast, where Kira now offers a few new vegan options: a Beyond Burger (or was it the Impossible Burger) and a vegan sausage.

Fern Creek Caspar

We had a very nice walk this morning and yes, a bit of the marine layer was blanketed out over the surrounding hillsides and pastures.  It was a cool morning, and there were a few Fog Dodgers enjoying the early morning walk.  It was a brisk walk, and with lots of chatter to go with the stride.

I did take a few pictures on the way to the walk, and love to share those with all.
