The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

COVID 19, 5 COASTAL TRAIL

This morning, we ran and walked the Coastal Trail.  It was foggy and 51 degrees, but on Friday, I walked the same section of trail and the sun was out and so were the flowers.

This morning, the same flowers were all closed up and not as pretty, but John got a pretty rhododendren taken from his home, along with a nice spider web.

Fran was sporting a nice sweatshirt!

Present this morning:  Charlene, Ron, Neil, Shari, Peter, Fran, John, Nancy and Tom (9).

NEXT SUNDAY, 5/3, 8:00 A.M.,  GROUP RUN AND WALK, We've been meeting behind the Fire Station and using the Coastal Trail.  It works well, giving you several directions by which to start.   We've decided to meet there again on Sundays, at least for awhile.  Join us if you wish, keep social distancing in mind and bring a mask.  By combining a walk or run with an essential trip for groceries or to pick up a meal to go, I think, is a way to drive a short distance, for locals at least.

County Shelter in Place Order continuespertinent section and current revision copied below:

Allowed:
  • Outdoor Recreation may now be initiated from within a 20 mile drive of one’s residence taking into account the new provisions in the  Facial Covering Order
  • When engaging in recreational activities in public, it is recommended that everyone bring a facial covering with them in a safe and accessible location and wear that where it is difficult to comply with social distancing requirements. However, the Order clarifies that for some public recreational activities which cause people to more forcefully expel airborne particles, the six feet social distance requirement may not be enough and may call for additional measures.
EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN AND WALK @ 7:30 A.M.,   for now, we're starting behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station and using the Coastal Trail - Middle access on Tuesdays.  On Thursdays, we are starting at Harvest Market at Mendosa's, Mendocino.

COVID 19, 4

Fort Bragg Landing, Otsuchi Point in distance
The photo above shows what the morning was like, grey, calm, 54 and perfect for a run or walk.  We're concluding another week of Shelter-In-Place due to Covid 19 or Coronavirus.  Running and walking for exercise is allowed though and we are fortunate to have the Coastal Trail.

John has sent me a couple of interesting photos, comparing Laurel Street on a normal day and Laurel Street with all businesses closed because of Covid 19.

Out for a walk or run this morning were:  Charlene, Ron, John, Shari, Neil, Nancy and Tom (7).
Blooming lilac, J. Loomis
Ahh, but there were others.  Other Fog Dodgers walking from their homes were Fran, Toni and Joe (10).  I received these photos after posting, and it's too difficult to rearrange things with "Blogger" so I'm just going to stick them all in here.  Thanks everyone!

Fran said, "There’s a wee bit of Ireland just south of Little Lake, near my house…with some wildlife not native to the Emerald Isle.
Hello to all my Fog Dodger buddies.

And from Toni and Joe, walking from home:

At least six of us (maybe more?) helped support David's Restaurant by picking up our take-out breakfasts.  Kira is most thankful.

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/26,  On Thursday the 16th, the Mid-week Fog Dodgers used the recently opened (by word of mouth only) Coastal Trail, beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.  We decided to meet there again on Sundays, at least for awhile.  Join us if you wish, keep social distancing in mind and bring a mask.  By combining a walk or run with an essential trip for groceries or to pick up a meal to go, I think, is a way to drive a short distance, for locals at least.

Covid 19, 3

We've made it through another week of Shelter In Place.  Our county is doing so good, still just 4 cases and they all have recovered!

John enjoyed his run from home and sent a few pictures and a poem.  Happy Easter!  And clearly, it's Spring time.

A poem from John.

Easter is coming...
No Easter egg hunts, no picnics, no family gatherings, and ham.
No Church services, no flowers, just TV and spam.
Not a jelly bean, or colored egg, or Easter Bunny to be seen.
Just a quick trip to the store, a mask, and some alcohol to clean.

Tom and Nancy ran and walked around town.  We were in the "Knob Hill" neighborhood, up around Cotton Auditorium.  The early morning stillness made the whole neighborhood smell really good.  I don't know all the flowers but there were jasmine, wisteria, honeysuckle to name a few, a the smell was powerful and nice!

Toni and Joe walked the Gibney Lane trail.  She took this selfie and said it was awful.  She does look a little strained, maybe needs a longer arm.

Fran walked in her area and sent some interesting pictures:

Nice home with ocean view

These people might like baseball.  Thanks Fran.
Because of the Shelter In Place ordinance, we've changed the Tuesday/Thursday Group Run a bit.  A new time and starting place and you can read about it below.

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/19,  On Thursday the 16th, the Mid-week Fog Dodgers used the recently opened (by word of mouth only) Coastal Trail, beginning behind the Fort Bragg Fire Station.  We decided to meet there again on Sunday the 19th.  Join us if you wish, keep social distancing in mind and bring a mask.  By combining a walk or run with an essential trip for groceries or to pick up a meal to go, I think, is a way to drive a short distance, for locals at least.

COVID - 19, 2

Another week of Shelter at Home, and it seems to be working!  Mendocino County has held steady at 4 active cases for a couple of weeks.  We had almost an inch of rain overnight and this morning.  That's good for our redwoods but not so good for our worms, and at least a couple of frogs.  Yeah, that's what we found on our local roadway, thousands of worms.  And, I don't for a minute, forget about the rest of world and how Corona Virus is taking it's toll.

We ran and walked our own neighborhoods, and present today:

Easter Bunny is here!

Those were a couple of cute things I saw on my walk.

Toni and Joe got their breakfast to go from Kira,  Tom and Nancy will do the same tomorrow.

John ran his old neighborhood route and says he had a good run.

I think there will be more Fog Dodgers chiming in later but for now, that's about it.

I hope we can all stay well and that, as they are saying, "We'll get through this."

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/12,  We'll have to run and walk from our homes.  Let me know how you did!

County Shelter in Place Order, pertinent section here:

Allowed: "To engage in outdoor activity, such as walking, jogging, hiking or biking, initiated from one’s residence, which does not involve the use of a motor vehicle or public transit to the location of exercise, such as for example, within walking, jogging, hiking, or biking distance of your place of residence only, provided the individuals comply with Social Distancing Requirements as defined in this Section."

We have had a Fog Dodger Run/Walk every Sunday for almost 22 years now.  This isn't going to stop the Fog Dodgers.  So, I will be walking from my home and I suggest that you do also.  I'd welcome an email ( triley@mcn.org ) from you saying that you were "present".  Give the general area where you walked or ran and if you get an interesting picture or bit of trivia, include that.  I'll post the blog and I bet John can find a picture.  It will be a Multi-venue Fog Dodger Walk/Run!

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN AND WALK @ 7:30 A.M., MENDOCINO AREA (we can do this if we combine it with an essential shopping trip and maintain our social distancing).  Contact Tom if you want to join in but aren't sure where to meet.
