The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

POMO BLUFFS - NOYO BAY

It was a gorgeous morning!  John's photo below shows what it was like at our 8:00 start, 56 degrees, sunny and calm.  As I write this, it is 84 degrees and climbing, not our average day.

J. Loomis photo, our starting point and the conditions

It's really nice, to run across the Noyo Bridge and out and around on our new Coastal Trails.  When the north and south halves finally get connected, it will be a great resource for our community.  It already is!

I've been told that the Fern Canyon Trail at Van Damme has been cleared of fallen trees and is in pretty good shape.  So, I reinserted it into our venues and we'll check it out in two weeks.  If you're walking with a four legged friend, you can still do this walk, just take the road to the upper meadow campground instead of going up the creek.  While in this area, many like the Champagne Brunch at the Little River Inn after their run/walk.

WARD AVENUE

J. Loomis photo, Harvest time
It was just a great morning!  I think it was about 53 degrees and there was only the slightest of a breeze, with cloudless, sunny skies.  Perhaps it became a little too warm for running but for walking, it was perfect!

Present today:  Toni, Joe, Geri, Nancy T., Roger, Susan, Bruce, Jan, John, Neil, Fran, Nancy and Tom (13).

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

Welcome Beth!  Thanks, Jan, for recruiting another runner!  Hopefully Beth's run was enjoyable and she will return to run with us regularly.

Caspar Creek Heron, J. Loomis photo
We ran and walked the Caspar Logging Roads today.  It was 49 degrees with just a thin overcast and the sun was trying to break through.  Conditions were just right for a little exercise.

I think these are in John's garden, J. Loomis photo
Also present today:  Gaye, Mark, Greg, Fran, Charlene, Laura, Cheryl, Toni, Susan, Bruce, Geri, Nancy B., Nancy T., Roger, Pat, Leon, Jeff, John, Nancy and Tom (22).

Road 500, which is the road most of us used today, has a lot of loose rock and also a lot of large embedded rocks, all perfect for tripping up runners.  I don't know what to do about it, we'll just have to be super careful not to fall victim.  This, I think, is still perhaps our best venue, since it works for everyone and other than the tripping hazards, is in good condition year round.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 18TH, WARD AVENUE, see "Our Routes" above.  A nice (0.5 at 6:30 a.m.) low tide if you like walking or running the beach.

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD.

NOYO HEADLANDS TRAIL - NORTH

It was a really nice morning for a walk or a run.  When we met at 8:00, it was 53 degrees, sunny with a little haze and with a breeze of about 5 mph from the north.

Noyo Jetty, J. Loomis photo
The water was pretty choppy but quite a few boats were out, perhaps because there are some salmon being caught or maybe just because it's like the last weekend of another summer.

Tom and Nancy brought their daughter, Shannon, and grand-daughter, Aliya.  Rick brought his son, Sam.  Now I get confused, as some arrived late and some arrived early.  To the best of my recollection, present today were:  Deb, Sam, Susan, Bruce, Nancy T., Roger, Toni, Zelda, Jan, Cheryl N., Neil, Jeff, Bob, Geri, Bill, Charlene and Ron (23).

Thanks to John, for today's photos.  I think the flowers, fruit and the green pumpkin  are from his yard.
