The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

It was a nice, chilly morning at Van Damme State Park, 46 degrees I think.  Thanks to John, we have some photos of the morning.  Little buds are beginning to open on many of the trees and bushes and the creek was flowing well enough to make nice sounds.

I'd like to get a few more walks and runs on the Big River Haul Road before the mosquitoes keep us away.  So, next week we'll go there again.  Big River is perfect for all of us.

A Happy Birthday Fran Day at Laguna Point

The Fog Dodgers gathered in a spectacular sun filled spot at Laguna Point. The temperature was 47 degrees.

Mackerricher Sunrise by J. Loomis

We violated Tom's one and only rule in that the starting time was slightly delayed, not because of negligence, but due to the singing of happy birthday and presentation of some very special baked goods from Gay's kitchen.
Everyone walked out to the point on the boardwalk. There we spotted a Western Gull, where we learned from the Audubon members in the group, that the Western Gull can be identified by the dark on it's back and the yellow beak with the red tip.

The question of the day. Where is the lagoon? Is Lake Cleone a misnomer?
Should it have been named
Mackerricher Lagoon?

Thanks John for the beautiful photos and talented work of art.

It was a day of learning for me, thanks to John, I now know that Pacific means
peaceful waters. Being from eastern Washington I had no idea. I never saw  Pacific until  was 12 years old.
Upon further research I learned it was named by Ferdinand Maggellan.
The water was calm that day.

Present today were John, Sam, Deb, Fran, Jean, Cindy, Barbara, Charlene, Joe, Gay, and Bob. Sorry if you were there and I missed getting your name.
Although sunny at the start the fog slipped in the last few minutes of the walk run to cool us down.

RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK

Very cold, 37 degrees this morning.  It was nice though, to walk through the empty campground and in to Fern Canyon for a bit.  It looked very winter-like, everything very dormant and bare.  Driving to Russian Gulch, the sunshine and fog kept taking turns.  John's photos today depict just how it was, foggy in one place and sunny in another.  We were right on the edge.

                                                          Caspar Beach, thanks John.

Present today:  Fran, Cindy, Toni, Joe, Barbara, Jean, Shari, John, Deb, Sam, Charlene, Nancy and Tom (13).

Listen up!  Next week, we're starting in a slightly different and new spot, the Laguna Point Parking Lot.  Not the parking lot at Lake Cleone, but the lot at the end of the road.  It's a great starting point and from there, you can walk the boardwalk out to the whale/seal watching point, or walk the campgrounds or Haul Road.  Good location for running, walking, biking, dog walking, everything!  And, we're meeting here by request, thanks Fran!
