The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

MacKerricher Haul Road

Deja vu. It seemed like last Sunday all over again. I don't think I can keep saying that it was fun and retain any credibility. This morning, we were on the MacKerricher Haul Road and it was 47, which is 3 degrees colder than last Sunday, pretty gloomy and dark with rain falling steadily. The difference this morning, if any, was that we had to contend with the wind, which drove the rain right down to the skin.

Getting stars on their attendance reports this morning are: Toni, Randy F., Randy E., Johnny, Cindy, Jim, Fran, Charlene, Ron, Kim, John, Bob, Brad, Nancy and Tom (15). Nine of us enjoyed breakfast at The Laurel Deli in The Depot............... Ahhhh, what the heck, it was fun!

NEXT SUNDAY, Jan. 2nd, 2011 @ 8:00 A.M.: THE RON JAHELKA TRAIL, along Big River. See "Our Routes" above. Breakfast will be at David's Restaurant (so that I can hopefully join you after making my Annual Reserve America reservation challenge at 8:00 a.m.) I will appoint Johnny to be the Official Timekeeper, hope he's there.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:15 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7:15 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Hare Creek, JSF Rd. 400

At 8:00 this morning, it was 50 degrees, pretty dark with the thick clouds over us and a light rain fell. It was as if we were school kids again, taking off down the hill, kicking rocks and jumping puddles. Present were: Melissa, Toni, Randy, John, Bob, Johnny, Nancy and Tom. It was fun, at least more so than not. Late in the hour it started coming down harder, kind of making us all look like drowned rats by the time we finished.

With towells and dry clothes we all seemed none the worse, as we were joined by Brad and Allen for breakfast at David's Restaurant (10).

Merry Christmas everybody!

NEXT SUNDAY, 12/26/10 @ 8:00 A.M.:
MACKERRICHER HAUL ROAD (see "Our Routes" above), chosen because it's supposed to rain most of the next week so other trails will be pretty muddy and Whitesboro Grange might be too far for some on the day after Christmas. Oh, I'll miss the Grange folk.

JSDF Rd. 450 / Potluck and Cookie Exchange

Johnny was almost correct, Rd. 450 "should have time to dry out" from the midweek rains but it didn't quite make it. It was a little sticky, muddy and even slippery in some spots but generally nice. The weather was just perfect for a walk or run in the forest, 52, overcast and calm. It was a great morning to be out.

I want to plead with everyone to check this blog early in the week so that you'll know what's going on in the next week or two. I know that it's not as personal as the old method of receiving an e-mail but on the other hand, it's so easy to do when it's "Bookmarked" on your internet browser. I say this because I think a few people didn't make it to the potluck today and it could be because they didn't check the blog until the last minute??? Just wondering out loud here. I really want all Fog Dodgers to remain with the group. It's healthy and it's fun!

The blog format makes keeping an e-mail address list unnecessary, allows substitute authors more easily, will in the future, make it easier for out of town people to find and join us, allows comments and photos, etc., etc. I too prefer the way the e-mail format reads but this is for the best, let's make it work! I welcome your comments and they're easy to post.

What some people missed today was an absolutely fabulous house, potluck breakfast and cookie exchange. Our thanks go to Mark and Gay, Mark's mom, Christine and Gay's mom and dad, Nathalie and Harry, for opening up their most beautiful home to us and to all who brought or cooked the fantastic foods and desserts. We all had a really wonderful time. Thank you Mark and Gay!

Cindy and Jim set a record today. They brought their 3 children, Jeff, Holly and Adam and their spouses and friends, Michelle, Ed, Tina, Dana and Mike. That's a family of 10 folks! Thanks, Cindy and Jim. Also present today, Brad, Johnny, Tanya, Brent, John, Bob, Deb, Sam, Nancy B., Rick, Maddelyn, Scott, Pat, Fran, Nancy T., Roger, Orah, Steve, Suzi, Nancy and Tom (36).

NEXT SUNDAY,12/19/10 @ 8:00 A.M.: HARE CREEK, J.S.F. ROAD 400, Gravel Pit Road, (see "Our Routes" above). Yes, Nancy and Roger T., you'll have to do it again.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Caspar Logging Road

It was a beautiful, almost muggy and unusually warm December day on the Caspar Logging road and surrounding trails - a nice respite from the recent rains. I was surprised just how dry the trails were.

It was around 52F when Larry T. and I left the house to be greeted at the Caspar Logging Road by John, Bob, Gay, Mark, Randy, Roger, Nancy, Orah, Steve, Maddelyn, Scott, Neil, and Cheryl (15). Eight of us went for breakfast at David's Deli.

NEXT WEEK, Gay reminded me we are due for our annual Cookie Exchange and potluck. This short notice should ensure that all the cookies are freshly made. Seriously, they needn't be fancy, folks. Roger and Nancy asked me if there were any rules, and yes, there is ONE RULE: You take home an equal amount of cookies as you bring. That's the only rule we've ever needed.

So, after the run/walk, bring your cookies and a breakfast dish to share over to Gay & Mark's home, as they have graciously offered to host (out Pearl Ranch Road). Gay says she will fire up the waffle irons, so there's should be plenty for all.

NEXT SUNDAY, December 12, 2010 @ 8 AM: Let's try the Jackson State Forest Road 450. Looking at the extended forecast, it should have time to dry out from the projected mid-week rains. See "Our Routes" above.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD & Whitesboro Grange

It was a beautiful morning on Navarro Ridge. A little cold (34), yes, but once we all got moving, I think it was okay. Big Thanksgiving dinners have a way of creating good turnouts for our walks and runs. The sky was clear and blue and the sun so low you couldn't see when headed east but beautiful vistas rewarded us coming back. We got the emus excited, they wanted to join us. Fog hung in the canyon below us like a white sea, or like the dry ice fog you see on a stage.

Thank you, Pat, for bringing your daughter, Teresa, and grand-daughter, Heather. Teresa did a half marathon last month and is now looking forward to her next one in May. She and Heather live in Virginia. Also present this morning were: Johnny, Fran, Cindy, Jim, Gay, Mark, Tanya, Brent, John, Bob, Nancy T., Roger, Maribeth, Rod, Charlene, Ron, Nancy and Tom (21).

After our run/walk, 16 of us enjoyed the great Whitesboro Grange Pancake Breakfast.

NEXT SUNDAY, 12/5/10 @ 8:00 A.M.: CASPAR LOGGING ROAD (see "Our Routes" above).

Thanksgiving Day Food Bank Bin Run 2010 - beta

Sunny and 35F at 8 AM, it was a great morning to burn off yet another frost and a few anticipated calories coming to visit later on today....

At the Boatyard, I was joined by Tom, Nancy, Rod, Maribeth, John, and Bob (7). We made our drops in the Fort Bragg Food Bank bin there, and took off for Safeway to do the same. From there it was on to Purity, but we had to carry our offerings back to Safeway as there was no bin there, and dry goods seemed more popular for some reason. Then back through Safeway again and on over the bridge to Harvest took us all just under an hour (3.4 miles round trip). Yes, I did manage another trip to Safeway and back in that time.

Along the way, several of us bumped into Jim and Cindy, and there was a Kim sighting as well. Hey, it's a small town after all!

A few confused-then-enthused cashiers seemed to enjoy our frenetic early morning shopping, though I'm sure they saw plenty of that later on. The breakfast choices are certainly limited on Thanksgiving Day, but Brad met 5 of us for breakfast at Perkos, where we eagerly plotted for next year. We hope many more will join us next year. If you have suggestions, do please let me know.

Hope you all had a Grand Thanksgiving Day. See you Sunday!

MacKerricher Haul Road

John Loomis, Lake Cleone, 7:15 a.m. Sunday 11/21/10

It was a little brisk and a whole lot of beautiful this morning on the MacKerricher Haul Road. At 8:00 it was 44 degrees and maybe 2/3 sunny and calm. The forecast was for much worse so it was a great morning! Present were: Pat, Fran, Gay, Mark, Melissa, Laurie, Nancy T., Roger, Rod, John, Randy E., Brad, Johnny, Randy F., Toni, Deb, Sam, Nancy and Tom (19). Ten of us went to The Laurel Deli for breakfast and it too was great!

Okay, so you're planning on a big Thanksgiving dinner next Thursday? The best way to start the day would be to join us 8:00 a.m. for a nice walk or run and to burn a couple hundred calories. We'll stop several times along the way to gather food for Food Bank. Please see the write-up below and try to join us.

NEXT SUNDAY, 11/28/10 @ 8:00 A.M.: NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD (see "Our Routes" above).

Monday, November 15, 2010

It's not a race. You won't even get a t-shirt for it. No goodie bags, and no start or finish lines, either.

THANKS-GIVING morning at 8 AM, we'll meet at the Boatyard -- NOT, I repeat, NOT the usual Thursday scene at Van Damme State Park at 7 AM. You can sleep in this Thursday!

First stop is Harvest Market, where you may wish to purchase something to put in the Fort Bragg Food Bank bin there. Then we'll run/walk to Safeway (1.1 miles), where you may wish to purchase something else to put in the Fort Bragg Food Bank bin at the east entrance. Then we'll run/walk to Purity (0.6 miles), where you may wish to purchase something else to put in the Fort Bragg Food Bank bin there. You get the idea.

Now follow the same path back, to Safeway, then to Harvest. You want to do a detour through Otis Johnson park with me? Sure, why not?

The walkers may only wish to do the Harvest-Safeway-Harvest route (2.2 miles round trip).

Who knows? Maybe this will become a feature event. That's up to you though.

We're still working on a breakfast venue following this, but unfortunately for us, David's Deli, Homestyle, and Laurel Deli are all closed. You'd think it was a holiday or something. Anyway, I'll update this when we find a spot.

Van Damme State Park's Fern Canyon

This morning, we were at Van Damme State Park. Nancy and I arrived just a couple of minutes before 8 and I thought to myself, I'll never remember who all is here, so many people. So, here goes, and if I leave your name off (and your spouse or guardian really cares where you are), just use the "Comment" box below to make corrections: Fran, Orah, Steve, Hector, Gay, Mark, Randy E., John, Toni, Randy F., Nancy T., Roger, Deb, Sam, Rod, Kennedy, Maddelyn, Scott, Brad, Johnny, Nancy B., Rick, Cheryl, Neil, Melissa, Suzi, Nancy and Tom (28).

The morning was just about perfect for running and walking, 51 degrees, part sun and part cloud with no wind. Fern Canyon was beautiful, the creek clear and sounds really nice. The trail is in really good condition but will probably only be so for one more rain.

Thanks to Steve Greenwood (Shaggy Cap photo) and to John Loomis (Boletus and Chantrelle photos) .

Nineteen of us had a fun and very good (I think?) breakfast at Mendocino's Bayview Cafe.

NEXT SUNDAY, Nov. 21st @ 8:00 A.M.: MACKERRICHER HAUL ROAD (see "Our Routes" tab above). Surprisingly, we've only been to MacKerricher four times this year.

SUNDAY, NOV. 28TH, NAVARRO RIDGE AND THE WHITESBORO GRANGE!

TEN MILE RIVER LOGGING ROAD

This morning, we ran and walked the Ten Mile River Logging Road. It was another perfect morning. Overnight, we had a good rain, good enough to freshen everything up and make the geese happy.

We welcomed a new member, Ann (or is it Anne?), and took off up the river as the geese were honking overhead (32). It was cloudy, calm and 54 degrees, very nice!

Also present today: Fran, Gay, Mark, Nancy T., Roger, Melissa, Johnny, Brad, Kennedy, Maddelyn, Scott, John, Randy, Nancy and Tom (16).

Afterwards, we split up and went to both Cafe One and The Laurel Deli for breakfast. Another very nice morning!

Thanks to John Loomis for this morning's photo.

NEXT SUNDAY, 11/14/2010 @ 8:00 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK (See "Our Routes" above).

Noyo River Haul Road

This morning, we returned to the A&W Logging Road. The weather forecast on Saturday had us thinking that it may be a repeat of last week's deluge but instead, we had a perfect morning. It was 54 degrees with a pretty sunrise and a gentle breeze.

It was nice to have Rick back from his lengthy absence and Nancy and Roger back from their Pacific trip. Also present were: Gay, Mark, Toni, Nancy B., Deb, Sam, Cindy, Jim, Maddelyn, Scott, Johnny, Brad, Nancy and Tom (17).

Thirteen of us enjoyed breakfast at David's, where we watched Kira hustling around, keeping order single handed. Good job, Kira!

It's been nine weeks since we've gone up to Ten Mile River and with the time change next week, I think it would be a good time to give it a try. Afterwards, breakfast choices would be the Fort Bragg Grange, Cafe One, Laurel Deli at the Depot or David's Restaurant.

NEXT SUNDAY, NOV. 7TH, @ 8:00 A.M., PACIFIC STANDARD TIME: TEN MILE RIVER LOGGING ROAD (see "Our Routes" above)

Noyo River Haul Road

Many adjectives could be used for this morning's run; dark, warm, wet, with wonderful sounds of rain and waterfalls. Only Johnny, Nancy and Tom got to experience it this morning, the rest missed out.

Daylight Savings Time is still on until November 7th, so it's pretty dark now at 8:00 a.m., especially on a cloudy and rainy morning. This morning, though pouring rain, was a warm 60 degrees. The little tributary streams and waterfalls were really flowing, making incredible sounds as were the large rain drops hitting the tree's leaves. It was a great morning to be out! Brad joined us afterwards for a great breakfast at David's Restaurant (4).

Since most of us like the A&W Logging Road and only 3 of us got to be there this morning, I think it fair to plan a repeat for next Sunday.

NEXT SUNDAY, 10/31/10, HALLOWEEN, @ 8:00 A.M.: A&W Logging Road (see "Our Routes" above).

OK, so it was pretty gray, cool (about 50F), and even a little muggy. If I was an epidemiologist, I'd say that combination caused a lot of folks to stay away, but there could be lots of other reasons too. Like that it was still pretty dark not long before that.... Still, it was pretty good weather for running/biking, and the walkers seemed to be having a good time too.

Reid and Heather brought his father, Will. Others in attendance today included Charlene, Fran, Mark, Gay, Pat, Cindy, Jim, Joel and Johnny (12). No breakfast today as a group, as we all headed off in our own directions.

Don't Forget: Daylight Savings Time is still with us until Sunday, November 7 this year.

NEXT SUNDAY, October 24, 2010 @ 8 AM:  A&W Logging Road (See "Our Routes" above)

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

Ron Jahelka Trail, Big River

It occurs to me, too late, that we should have been at 10-Mile today, but how many tens can you have in one day? Happy 10-10-10 everyone.

A little foggy, a bit humid and perhaps a tad early for some, it was still and 57F at the beginning of our morning run/walk. The beautiful red poison oak still reminded me it was really fall.

Sitting there wondering if I'd misread the venue, our park flash mob didn't fail me as everyone came piling in a few minutes before 8. Peter bids you all adieu, as this will be his last visit for this year. Never worry, he plans to be back with us next summer. It was really wonderful to see Tough Guy Rick B. back, even if it was for breakfast.

Also showing today were Jim, Cindy, Nancy B., John, Neil, Rick C., Toni, Gay, Mark, Randy, Fran, Scott, Maddelyn, Brad, Johnny and about a million mosquitoes (1,000,017). They still haven't migrated south for the winter.

Afterward, 8 of us had a great breakfast at the Bayview Cafe.

By the by, Daylight Savings Time doesn't go bye-bye until Sunday, November 7 this year.

Fern Canyon, Van Damme State Park

This morning, we ran and walked Van Damme State Park's Fern Canyon. It was more like a coastal summer morning than a fall morning. It was 54 degrees with a heavy overcast and calm, very good for walking and running. Two new persons this morning, welcome to Suzi and Geri. Others present: Tanya, Melissa, Randy, Toni, Nancy T., Roger, John, Cindy, Jim, Cheryl N., Neil, Deb, Sam, Bob, Kim, Peter, Nancy and Tom (20).

Ten of us had a very good breakfast at Mendocino's Bayview Cafe. It was a very nice morning, good scenery, exercise, food and people!

NEXT SUNDAY, 10/10/10 @ 8:00 A.M.: Group Run/Walk/Bike, The Ron Jahelka Trail along Big River (see Our Routes above).

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: Group Run/Walk, RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

NAVARRO RIDGE/ WHITESBORO GRANGE

Today we went to the Whitesboro Grange and had a good time running and walking out Navarro Ridge Road. It was a good morning, very summer-like, at 54 degrees with some fog and some sun. Fran brought her neighbor, Pat, again and Randy E. brought his aunt and her husband, Ron. I'm sorry, Randy, I forgot your Aunt's name, again. Hate it when I do that!

Also present this morning were: Cindy, Jim, Gay, Mark, John, Tanya, Brent, Johnny, Nancy and Tom (15).

After our run or walk, 11 of us had the usual and great Whitesboro Grange Pancake Breakfast.

Two good events coming up soon:

Next Saturday, there's the Noyo River Run 5K. The race is just part of a Health and Wellness Festival that includes lots of free health screenings and talks. Check it out by putting the following URL into your web browser: http://www.mcdh.org/wellness2010/

Then Sunday, October 3 there's "Run the Ranch": This should be a really nice run or walk for anyone interested in getting away from the fog and it benefits a good project. I couldn't upload a cleaner image. MacKerricher Haul Road

Folks, we aren't called the Fog Dodgers without reason. I'm not sure why there were so few of us this morning but for those of you that missed it, you missed a perfectly good morning. Carlin thought it was "wonderful"! John captured the essence of it in the photo below. I think all of the blog photos are or will be "clickable", that is, if you click on them, you'll get a larger image.

We were on the MacKerricher Haul Road this morning. It was 61 degrees (about as warm as it's ever been at one of our 8 a.m. starts) and foggy with a light drizzle. A half hour into our runs or walks, coming back, the light drizzle turned into a light rain. It was a good morning to run or walk. Present were: Carlin, Randy, Brad, Johnny, John, Melissa, Nancy and Tom (8).

Afterwards, six of us enjoyed Cafe 1 for breakfast.

Two good events coming up soon:

This should be a really nice run or walk for anyone interested in getting away from the fog and it benefits a good project. I couldn't upload a cleaner image. CASPAR LOGGING ROAD

Several people said to me this morning, "What a beautiful morning!" And it was! We were on the edge of the fog and John, always looking for an interesting photo, caught this view of the sunrise on Fern Creek Road.

Not your typical sunrise photo. Thank you, John.

It was 45 degrees, clear and calm at our 8:00 a.m. start. We had runners and walkers from all over the state. It was a pleasure to meet for the first time, Carlin, from Palo Alto and she says she will return frequently. Also nice to have Larry T., here visiting his mom, and bringing his children Jessica and Jason along again. Also present: Deb, Joyce, Gay, Mark, Cheryl, Neil, Heather, Reid, Toni, Randy F., Maddelyn, Scott, Bob, John, Johnny, Brad, Randy E., Melissa I., Nancy and Tom (24).

To Deb's embarassment, we gave her a fairly good rendition of Happy Birthday at the conclusion of our run/walk.

Oh, one other interesting footnote. For a long time now, we've been hoping that Brad would get more into the exercise thing, maybe pick up the pace and even try running a bit. Well, he did!! Maybe because of a change in his work days/hours, or whatever, he screwed up and was actually observed running on Saturday instead of Sunday! He also had our location wrong as he was seen running around the Botanical Gardens. Way to go Brad! Hopefully, with the new work days you'll join us often and demonstrate those skills.

About 14 of us had a fun and tasty breakfast at David's Restaurant (voted to have the best bacon on the coast) afterwards.

Run The Ranch 5K

This should be a really nice run or walk for anyone interested in getting away from the fog and it benefits a good project. I couldn't upload a cleaner image. Ten Mile River Logging Road

This morning, we ran and walked along Ten Mile River. We were joined by John's son, Jason, and by Fran's neighbor, Pat. Others present were: John, Fran, Melissa, Gay, Mark, Nancy T., Roger, Cheryl N., Neil, Toni, Randy F., Joyce, Brad, Johnny, Joel, Nancy and Tom (19).

It was a Fall-like morning, a 45 at the start (which seemed colder), clear and calm skies which made for perfect running and walking. I think that Campbell Timber or Baxman Gravel, or whoever is in charge of such things, recently did a lot of weed whacking along the roadway and therefore we didn't see many blackberries, at least not within easy reach. For Johnny and Joel, they may have seen some further up the road?? Also, there's something different this year with the weather and the seasons, many blackberry bushes were still in bloom and probably never will ripen.

It was a very nice morning. After the run/walk, 7 of us enjoyed breakfast at David's Restaurant in the Boatyard Center.

NEXT SUNDAY, 9/12/10 @ 8:00 A.M.:  CASPAR LOGGING ROAD (see "Our Routes" above)

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

Ron Jahelka Trail, Big River

This crisp morning didn't stop quite a few folks from showing up at Big River. Apparently, some of you have been away long enough you had to introduce yourselves to the "regulars"! Though in the mid 40's when we started, it warmed up nicely, with no breeze to keep the mosquitoes at bay -- I think some of them hadn't eaten in 3 months....

Just a reminder, on Sundays we still take off at 8 sharp, with or without you, even when Tom isn't here. Present today were John, Jim, Cindy, Sam, Deb, Peter, Nancy B., Roger, Nancy T., Joyce, Bob, Melissa, Marc, Scott, Kennedy, Maddelyn, Steve, Kathy, Randy, Heather, Fran, Laurie and Johnny (23). Wow, super job folks! Afterward, a few of us enjoyed breakfast at Bayview Cafe, with free coffee and no automatic gratuity!

NEXT SUNDAY, 9/5/10 @ 8 AM:  Ten Mile River Logging Road (See "Our Routes" tab above). As Tom pointed out last week, the blackberries should be out in force (the most plentiful a couple of miles down the road) for those who wouldn't otherwise make the trip up there to pick them. See you then!

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, August 22, 2010

This morning, we were on Navarro Ridge Road, running, walking and biking. It was a picture perfect morning to be out, 51, sunny and calm. There were great views of the fog in the Navarro River Canyon below us, just a very pretty morning.

First off, my apologies to Roger for removing him from the group two weeks ago (at least in print) and giving his wife, Nancy, daughter Jacqui, son-in-law Gavin and three grandchildren to Peter. Peter didn't complain though, they're all great people. Due to some glitch in the blog mechanics, I haven't been able to edit that blog (Aug. 8th's) yet.

I hope the blog format is working okay for everybody. Today, I had one comment from a member that loved it. I've also had a couple of comments not liking it. I think that in the long run, it's going to work out for the best. Remember, you can always post a comment at the end of each blog. Feel free to correct me when I insert your name into the wrong family or if my watch gets to be 16 seconds off again, whatever, the blog is for all of us.

Present today were: Fran, John, Bob, Laurie, Cindy, Jim, Peter, Charlene, Ron, Maddelyn, Scott, Toni, Randy F., Nancy and Tom (15). Afterwards, I think (we couldn't sit together) all 15 of us enjoyed the Whitesboro Grange Pancake Breakfast.

NEXT SUNDAY, 8/29/10 @ 8:00 A.M.:  RON JAHELKA TRAIL, along Big River, beginning 1/2 mile east of Hwy. One (see "Our routes" tab above). It's actually been 3 months since we last did this road.

In two weeks, 9/5/2010, we will meet up north on the Ten Mile River Logging Road. The blackberries should be plentiful for those that want to bring a bucket or ziploc.

The falls were gorgeous today - wish you could have been there, Bob

Seeming a little more like "fall" today, it was 54 and overcast with a slight breeze. I know that seems more like a description of summer thus far, except the poison oak is beginning to turn beautiful fall colors. At least the poison oak and nettle were far off the main trail, as Russian Gulch has been cleaned up nicely. There is still quite a lot of ground water seepage across the trail, and there were many campers today.

There wasn't a big turnout today, but it's about quality, not quantity, right? Roger and Nancy T. came without their children this week, and so did Peter -- hopefully someone's watching them. Also, there were Jim, Cindy, Fran, Nancy B., Bob, Laurie, Toni, Randy and Johnny (12), but no other speedy runners to enjoy the falls with me today.

NEXT SUNDAY, August 22, 2010 @ 8 AM:  It's time to go back to Navarro Ridge (See "Our Routes" tab above), followed by breakfast at the Whitesboro Grange. Yum. Tom and Nancy will be back, but Brad and I will be gone, so we'll see you the following week end.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM:
VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

This week we ran and walked the Fern Canyon Trail at Van Damme State Park. It was 54 degrees and foggy at the start, and at the end. It was nice to have Roger's daughter, Jacqui and son-in-law, Gavin, and their three children with us. Also a nice surprise to have a return visit from Erin. If that weren't enough, we gained a new runner, Randy. Johnny had almost forgotten what it's like to run with someone but today had company. Next week, maybe Johnny, San Diego Larry and Randy can have a real run! I wish Erin could be here again. You'll miss a good one Erin, probably would have brought back painful memories of the cold, wintery day that you hobbled back in for several miles with a terribly sprained ankle.

I've always said that we had only one "rule" and that is, that we start at exactly 8:00. This reminds me that we do have one other informal rule, it's called "Erin's Law". If you're going to be out longer than an hour, just let us know or else we'll be coming back looking for you. When Erin had her mishap, there was no such rule and so we waited, and waited, and waited...... We thought she was just out longer and having fun, not.

Also present today: Keith, Roger and Nancy T., Bob, Kim, Tanya, John, Brad, Joel, Peter, Randy F., Toni, Nancy and Tom (22). I feel that I've missed someone here.

For the record, I just checked my watch with "The Official" U.S. Time site ( http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Pacific/d/-8/java ) and found my watch to be 16 seconds fast, now corrected. My apologies to anyone that missed us by those 16 seconds.

After the run/walk, a whole bunch (maybe 16?) of us enjoyed breakfast at Mendocino's Bayview Cafe.

NEXT SUNDAY, Aug. 15, 2010, @ 8:00 A.M.:  RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARKSUNDAY, AUG. 22, NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD. Check "Our Routes" above.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, August 01, 2010

It was beautiful this morning, a couple of miles in from the ocean. Luckily, we ran and walked in Jackson State Forest on Road 450, high and along the south bank of Hare Creek, a couple of miles in from the ocean. It was 51 degrees and foggy at the start but we almost immediately moved into the sunshine. Interesting, I thought, of how fast a dirt road can turn from wet and muddy into soft sand. Generally though, the road was good and the morning perfect.

Present this morning were: Joyce, Gay, Mark, Maddelyn, Scott, John, Bob, Peter, Toni, Johnny, Brad, Randy, Kim, Tanya, Neil, Nancy and Tom (17).

Afterwards, 7 of us had a great (I think) breakfast at David's Restaurant in The Boatyard Center.

Good news! The trails at Russian Gulch and Van Damme State Parks are once again open and usable. No more stinging nettles or fallen trees or broken bridges! So,

NEXT SUNDAY, 8/8/10, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach parking lot. There's a good minus tide that morning but it's at 4:30 in the morning so parking should not be a problem.

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M., Group Run/Walk, RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M., Group Run/Walk, VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

At 57F and just a little breeze, it was beautiful morning out among the trees of the Caspar logging road area, for walkers, runners, and bicyclists. Things finally seem to be drying up a bit, but with that comes more dust, too. Where there had been small lakes, I still found a few puddles out on the single track trails. Though it takes a bit more to get out to this venue, it is a great one for the lack of traffic, ample parking, and varying routes. It's also dog-friendly. If you haven't made the trek out here, you should definitely try it sometime.

This morning was well attended, including Joel, Ron, Charlene, Cindy, Peter, Melissa, John, Nancy B., Randy, Toni, Mark, Gay, Orah, Steve, JoAnne, Kathee, Nancy T., Roger, Scott, Maddelyn, Deb, Bob and Johnny (23). Brad met about half of us at David's Deli, where things seem to be back to usual.

NEXT SUNDAY, August 1, 2010 @ 8 AM:  By request, let's go back to the beautiful trails of Jackson State Forest Road 450, up Simpson Lane. See the "Our Routes" tab above for directions, and everyone call Tanya to remind her.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM:
VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

This morning, we ran, walked and biked the MacKerricher Haul Road. We had at least (I hope I didn't miss somebody!) eight guests. Joel brought his brother, John, and Cindy and Jim brought five friends: Lynne, Terri, Jay, Barbara and Paul. Then, Roger and Nancy T. brought her daughter, Julie and grand-son, Logan. Also present were: Fran, Charlene, Melissa I., Bob, John, Johnny, Brad, Maddelyn, Scott, Orah, Steve, Hector, Joyce, Gay, Mark, Peter, Nancy and Tom (31).

We were rewarded with a perfect morning, 53 degrees, light breeze and partial sun. John Loomis caught this photo at MacKerricher last week on a similar day.

We all had a great morning! Afterwards, 19 of us had a really nice breakfast at The Laurel Deli at The Depot.

NEXT SUNDAY, 7/25/10, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, CASPAR LOGGING ROAD, see "Our Routes" above.

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M., Group Run/Walk, RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M., Group Run/Walk, VAN DAMME STATE PARK.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

This morning, we ran and walked around the South Fork of the Noyo River, on Jackson State Forest Roads 300, 350, 360 and 330 (Johnny, did you really say that? I know that road does go straight up......). Anyway, we were all around the Noyo River Egg Collecting Station. It was a beautiful morning, about 51 degrees at the start, under clear blue and calm skies. John got a really nice photo of the connector bridge between Rds. 300 and 350:

We had a nice potluck (Continental?) breakfast afterwards and played some killer Washer Toss games! Mark, you still lead 12-11 and it's your turn!

Present were: Johnny, Gay, Mark, Fran, Cheryl, Neil, John, Nancy, Tom and it was nice to have a new member, Peter (10). By the way, please read Peter's comment at the end of last week's blog. There have been mid-week walkers in the past and now you have another chance to get something going.

Another BTW, Brad had lunch at David's this week and was talking with the owner, Michelle. Michelle had heard about our visit there last Sunday and feels really bad that things didn't go all that smoothly. Folks, this probably was a little our problem and a little the restaurant's problem. As a very nice gesture though, Michelle would like to give any of you that were there last Sunday a coupon, please mention it at the counter.

NEXT SUNDAY, 7/19/10, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, MACKERRICHER HAUL ROAD, see "Our Routes" above.

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Couldn't have asked for a prettier morning! We ran and walked the A&W Logging Road along the Noyo River. It was 50 degrees, sunny and calm. It will be a real test for me this morning, to see if I saw everyone and can remember it, my apologies if I miss you. Johnny brought a friend Travis and a regular guest, Allen. Scott brought a friend, John and Maddelyn. Also present were: Brad, Charlene, Joyce, Fran, Nancy B., Rick, Joel, Kim, Adeline, Brian, Neil, Orah, Steve, Cindy, Jim, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (25).

I'm think that we overwhelmed David's Restaurant this morning, as 19 of us entered at once and kind of took over the place. There were no winners, not us, not the waitress, nor the cook. The bacon was still excellent though and I hope there are no hard feelings by anyone. I think that short of having advanced reservations for our group (almost impossible), our best breakfasts come when we fend for ourselves, such as next week.

NEXT WEEK, POT LUCK BREAKFAST AT THE NOYO RIVER EGG COLLECTING STATION.

Sunday, July 11th, 8:00 a.m., Group Run/Walk/Bike, Noyo River Egg Station, Jackson State Forest Road 350. It's great for walking, biking and running. There are two picnic tables there (about 20 yards apart). If you have a folding chair, you'd probably like to bring it along. Besides whatever food/snack item that you bring, also bring your own service and whatever beverage you like. We ran short on coffee last year so if you drink coffee, please bring a thermos or carafe. We'll provide cream and sugar for the coffee drinkers.

Last year, the morning was a little cool and a camp fire felt good. If this year promises to be the same, I'll bring firewood. There will be Washer Toss to play, lots of good food and lots of fun!

Allow 20 minutes driving time from the junction of Highways One and 20. Go east 5.9 miles on Hwy. 20, turn left onto Jackson State Forest Road 350, there's a fork near the beginning, stay to the right and then take the rocked dirt road 3 miles to the bottom and the river. You can't miss the picnic area and Egg Collecting Station. A couple of sections of the road are dusty so I wouldn't follow my friend too closely.

June 27, 2010

It was a really nice morning on Navarro Ridge, 52 degrees, full sun and calm. Other than a few cars passing by, only birds could be heard and they were happy today! Maybe it's the Pacific Plate or something lifting Navarro Ridge, those hills are getting tougher and tougher. Nancy kept me apprised, by 60ths, 20ths, 12ths, 6ths, 5ths, 4ths and 3rds, of how much we had left. We had a small group of runners and walkers. Thanks Rick and Nancy B. for bringing your long-time friends, Gail and Rigs. Also present were: John, Fran, Nancy T., Roger, Scott, Johnny, Nancy and Tom (12).

Thank you John Loomis for the photos, taken this morning on Navarro Ridge.

When reading the blog, be sure to read any comments that have been posted to the entries. Last week, I was wondering whether Johnny made it far enough up JSF Road 450 to see the creek. His comment at the end of last week's entry answers my question and I found it funny. You too, can post comments or correct my mistakes. First I'll tell you though, that all grammatical errors, spelling errors and omissions are intentional, done just to see if anyone is reading.

By request and because next weekend will be a busy holiday, we will meet at the A&W Logging Road and we're planning on checking out the Franklin St. Cafe after the run/walk.

Next Sunday, July 4th, 2010, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, A&W LOGGING ROAD, also known as Noyo River Logging Road (see location under "Our Routes" above).

EVERY TUESDAY, 7:00 A.M., GROUP RUNS/WALKS, RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK.

EVERY THURSDAY, 7:00 A.M., GROUP RUNS/WALKS, VAN DAMME STATE PARK.

June 20, 2010 - Father's Day

Happy Father's Day dads!

It was beautiful this morning in Jackson State Forest. We ran and walked JSF Road 450, which runs above and on the south side of Hare Creek. We never get too close to the creek, staying high above it. Johnny may get far enough to cross it, I'll have to ask him. It was 50 degrees at the start, with clear cloudless skies. What I noticed, was how nice the wind sounded, high in the tree tops and how brilliant blue the sky was. On the trail, it was calm and perfect for walking and running.

We all notice different things while out for our run or walk. Please feel free to add comments to the blog. More than one person has commented about the blog format. In a way, it is a little clunkier for us than simply receiving an e-mail. I am certain though, that once we get used to it, it will be better for all. One of the nice features about a blog is the ability to edit and make comments. Though not everyone can edit, any of the group can make a comment. To do so, you will need to have a G-mail account. I would recommend to everyone to get a Gmail account, since they are free, easy to set up and can be used when you make internet purchases, etc., where you'd rather not give another entity your regular e-mail address. Once you have a Gmail account, simply sign in on the blog's page and you're good to go!

Present today: John, Ry, Randy, Cindy, Jim, Gay, Mark, Maddelyn, Scott (Scott for some reason was traveling with a skunk in the back of his truck, hmmm), Johnny, Joel, Kim, Orah, Steve, Nancy B., Rick, Brad, Nancy, Tom and several people reported a Tanya sighting (20).

SAVE JULY 11, RUN/WALK POTLUCK BREAKFAST, NOYO EGG COLLECTING STATION, JSF RD. 350, SOUTH FORK NOYO RIVER.

NEXT SUNDAY, 6/27/10, GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD (see "Our Routes" above). We've got a few new members that may not have been to Navarro Ridge Road or the Whitesboro Grange. Please try to make it. I think you'll agree that it's worth the few extra minutes of driving.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: GROUP RUNS, RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7:00 A.M.: GROUP RUNS, VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

June 13, 2010

This is a beautiful weekend. Almost warm weather and if you're in to chasing abalones, the lowest tides of the year. For the run/walk/bike, we were at the A&W Logging Road, along the Noyo River. It was 54 at the start, with sunny skies and a slight ocean breeze that was cool.

It was nice to gain a new member today, Randy. Also present this morning were: Johnny, Brad, Kennedy, Maddelyn, Scott, Cheryl, Kim, Fran, Nancy B., Kira, Bob, Caleb, John, Nancy T., Roger, Heather, Charlene, Ron, Rick, maybe Patricia (?), Elaine, Deb, Nancy and Tom (25).

John thought this venue should be called The Pendulum. It has a long downhill followed by a long uphill, long downhill, long uphill, whatever, it's a challenge.

Afterward, 14 of us had a very nice breakfast at David's Restaurant in The Boatyard.

NEXT SUNDAY, 6/20/10 @ 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/ JACKSON STATE FOREST ROAD 450, (along the north side of Hare Creek) Take Simpson Lane 1.9 miles east from Highway One. You'll see a large parking area and gate on left-hand side of the street. The Fogdodger route follows old Road 450 which is accessed via the gate in the parking area.

Sunday, June 6, 2010

June 06, 2010

This morning, we were at Big River, for what was a "typical" summer-like morning, overcast, 59 degrees and swarming with mosquitoes. Mosquitoes not too bad if you are Johnny, he can outrun them, but for many of the group, they're ferocious!

We ran, walked and biked, and present today were: Fran, and she brought a friend, Reba, John, Joel, Bob, Caleb, Nancy T., Roger, Deb, Sam, Kathy, Steve, Ron, Laurie, Kim, Maddelyn, Scott, Heather, Johnny, Joyce, Nancy and Tom (22).

Six of us enjoyed breakfast at Mendocino's Bayview Cafe.

The broken bridge at Van Damme is now repaired, not sure if the tree blockages are totally removed, and the trail remains very muddy. Russian Gulch State Park's trail is almost completely overgrown with stinging nettles. So,

NEXT SUNDAY, 6/13/10, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, A&W ROAD,
also known as the Noyo River Logging Road, beginning at the Fort Bragg Police Department, corner of Cypress and Franklin.

Remember, you can always (24x7) dial the message phone to double check on run locations, 964-9348.

May 30, 2010

This morning, we ran, walked and biked the Caspar Logging Road. It was 48 degrees at the start (third week in a row, Bob), sunny and calm, a beautiful morning. It was nice to see Brad's mom and dad, Carmen and Don, again and San Diego Larry (Larry T.) was here, along with his daughter and son, Jessica and Jason. Also, a first timer, Linda, welcome. Also present were: Brad, Johny, Maddelyn, Scott, Joel, Fran, Gay, Mark, Bob, John, Kim, Adeline, Brian, Heather, Reid, Cindy, Jim, Nancy B., Rick, Charlene, Ron, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (31).

I don't think any of us missed seeing the motorcycles of last week. It was just a very nice morning. Next time that we run at Caspar, we will start at the Duck Pond for a change. Some of the group miss that lower section of the course so we'll do it every once in awhile.

After the run/walk this morning, 15 of us had a fun and delicious breakfast at David's Restaurant. Scott got a "special" punch on his David's Breakfast Punch Card!

NEXT SUNDAY, 6/6/10, 8:00 A.M., GROUP RUN/WALK/BIKE, THE RON JAHELKA TRAIL, aka Big River Rd., beginning 1/2 mile east of Hwy. One.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

May 23, 2010

This morning we made the trek to Navarro Ridge, with promise of the standard Whitesboro Grange breakfast afterward. It was sunny and 48 degrees at the beginning, and warmed up fast, with little if any breeze even on the way back. Present today were: Gay, Mark, Cindy, Jim, Joyce, Nancy T., Roger, Kim, Adeline, John, Kathy, Steve, Nancy, Tom, Charlene and Johnny (16).

Someone please, please remind us! Next year, before the fourth Sunday of May, we should find out the course for the California 10,000. According to Tom, "It's called the 10,000 because that's the number of motorcycles entered and today their ride was the same as ours, Navarro Ridge." I couldn't help thinking that perhaps Mad Max 4: Fury Road was finally in production, or maybe my blood sugar was just a little low. Still, nothing some blackberry syrup couldn't fix (Tina Turner never had it so easy).

NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 30 @ 8 AM, with fewer motorcycles:  CASPAR LOGGING ROAD (JACKSON STATE FOREST ROAD 500), beginning at the junction of JSF Road 500 and 600, about 2 miles east of Hwy 1. Go east on Fern Creek Rd. (where the duck pond is), 1/4 mile, turn right and go 1/4 mile, turn left on Caspar Orchard Road, go about 3/4 mile until it merges with Rd. 500 at the junction with Rd. 600.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM:
VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

May 16, 2010

Well, never mind then. Tom and Nancy came back early, we didn't get back to town until late late, and Lone Bob threw me a bone here. Thanks Bob. I really do get to the falls. Some days, I even have a picnic while I'm waiting.

According to Tom, it was 48 degrees at the start. Near as I've been able to tell, present were: Bob, Tom, Nancy, John, Kira, Bill, and? Well, now you get yet another chance to be heard. Just chime in with a comment on this blog. Tell us what/who you saw!

Wrote Lone Bob:
If last Sunday was Mothers Day then this Sunday was “invasion of the Abalone snatchers” day. Travelers having to use the Coast Highway would soon discover a highway with shoulders draped and clogged with snatcher vehicles. Not surprising because the ocean conditions and weather were perfect for divers. And as it most often is the temperature was also perfect for runners but not so for sunbathers.
What was the actual temperature is only a question a newcomer would ask. Seasoned residents know that the average temperature clusters in a narrow range from 49 degrees winter to 59 degrees summer. For those that must know the temperature read on, others may skip to the next paragraph. Given that it is spring season and early AM pick a number near the bottom of that range and you’ll have the correct answer.
More about the weather. Overcast with a slight breeze blowing from the South foretelling the possibility of rain and the return arrival of Fog Dodger rap musician professor Bill Heffernan. However the biggest surprise to many was that Tom and Nancy were present. The strong Iowa wind blew them home early proving why Iowa is the wind energy producing capital of our nation. Iowa was the corn growing capital but with grass fed beef becoming more popular than corn fed corn stalks are yielding to towers of wind turbine.
The day began as everyone arrived at the starting point near the A&W logging road. So named because at one time there was an A&W located near the entrance to the road. Of course logging was never conducted by A&W but they did sell juicy burgers with Root Beer in ice cold glass mugs. The burgers were wrapped in foil and plastered with plenty of sauce to run down forearms and drip from elbows. Meanwhile runners continued gathering, greeting friends, chatting of recent current events, yawning, stretching, removing or adding clothing, and last minute lacing of shoes. As Tom Time neared 8:00 AM runners intuitively turned East, Horace Greeley not among us, and scurried like quail to the haul road.
Approaching the river runners encountered an abundance of flora and fauna. Wild radish and foxglove were in near peak bloom. A plethora of feathered friends too numerous to mention varying in size from the tiny Titmouse to the grand Osprey. A faint odor of stale mud mixed manure from cloven hoofed bovine wafted from the nearby pastures. Some runners felt a ripple effect when crossing the river. John Loomis spotted what appeared to be a lost abalone diver in the water.
Runners exited the river bottom and entered the xylem and phloem filled forest that leads to the dreaded never ending hill. The hill that can take a runner to their threshold of pain before reaching the summit. Runners now turning about at their chosen spot for the knee jarring downhill thrill to the end of one adventure and to the remainder of another beautiful day.

NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 23 @ 8 AM: NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD, beginning at the Whitesboro Grange Hall, 1 1/2 miles east of Hwy One. This location takes an extra 10 minutes for most of us but is worth it.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM:
RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM:
VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

Sunday, May 9, 2010

May 9, 2010

This morning we ran and walked Russian Gulch State Park. No (mountain) lions, tigers or bears, but nettles and blackberries, oh my! It was overcast and still, but another beautiful Spring morning and we had the entire park to ourselves. Bob doesn't think I get to the falls, but I assure you all, I do, and they are in great form right now. Go see them if you haven't. The native Rhodies on the north perimeter trail are gorgeous, but it's a bit soggy in a few places.

There were plenty of birds, and Ron was all aflutter about it. No, I'm not nearly out of bird metaphors. If you must know, and apparently you must, present were: Osprey, American Kestrel, Black Oystercatcher, Acorn Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Pacific-slope, Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, Steller's Jay, Tree Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, Wilson's Warbler, Black-headed Grosbeak, Brush Rabbit, Yellow-eared Chipmunk (these last two are birds, Ron?) (20).

The humans present were: Bob, Ry, Sam, Deb, Ron, Charlene, Laurie and her friend Rich, Brian, Kim, Adeline, Fran, Joel, John, Charlene, Neil, Cindy, Jim, and me, Johnny (19). Afterwards, 5 of us had a tasty breakfast at Laurel Deli.

Soon, we'll also dispense with these weekly emails, and you all (and anyone else!) can check out our blog that Brad has set up. We'll overlap for a few weeks, but then it will be the only place to get the email updates. Bookmark this url now. Come on, go ahead, DO IT. You know you want to: http://fogdodgers.blogspot.com/

Now here's the problem about next week. Brad and I are not back until that Sunday night, and Tom and Nancy will still be away. And when the cat's away, the mice will play. So it's a contest. Sort of. Send me your "blog", and I'll publish the "best" to the website Sunday night. You know the format. You know the venue. You know your critics. You know you can do it. You may not yet realize the challenge of trying to emulate Tom.

NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 16 @ 8 AM: A&W LOGGING ROAD (also known as Noyo River Logging Road), beginning at the Fort Bragg Police Department, corner of Franklin and Cypress.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY @ 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

May 2, 2010

This morning we ran and walked the Ron Jahelka Trail at Big River. It was a balmy 49 degrees when I left Fort Bragg and there was a slight offshore breeze (read "headwind on the way back") picking up. True to May, it was a beautiful Spring morning. That's the most weather report you'll get out of me. There were plenty of birds, and Ron had a whole flock of bird watchers out there this morning too. Hopefully I didn't ruffle any few feathers zipping past them on the way back. My apologies Ron, but they reminded of the Guinea hens that always played chicken with our school bus. And I was wearing yellow.

Present were: Fran, Joel, John, Charlene, Steve, Kathy, Joyce, Elaine, Johnny, Neil, Cheryl, Cindy, Jim, Nancy T., Roger T., Mark, Nancy and Tom (18). Please forgive me if I missed anyone. I did not have my usual notepad with me at the start, and I'm not as adept at this as Tom. Afterwards, Tom and Nancy took off on vacation, and Brad joined me for a delicious breakfast at Bayview Cafe, while many apparently made the trek to The Boontling Classic 5K race, and the rest of you went home to plant your garden now that it's May (hint, hint).

Soon, we'll also dispense with the weekly emails, and you all (and anyone else!) can check out our blog that Brad has set up. We'll overlap for a few weeks, but then it will be the only place to get the email updates.

NEXT SUNDAY 5/9/10 8 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY TUESDAY 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

EVERY THURSDAY 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

April 25, 2010

This morning, we ran and walked Jackson State Forest Road 400, down Covington Gulch and along Hare Creek. It was a very cold 39 degrees at the start but otherwise a beautiful Spring morning. The creek is flowing fast and clear and the Forget-Me-Not flowers were beautiful.

Present were: Pat and Bill, friends of the Banker's that were here last year also, Nancy B., Rick B., Fran, Kim, Joel, Maddelyn, Scott, John, Bob, Johnny, Brad, Neil, Cindy, Jim, Nancy T., Roger T., Nancy and Tom (20). Afterwards, 14 of us had a delicious breakfast at David's Restaurant in the Boatyard Center.

Next Sunday is The Boontling Classic, a really nice, small, local 5K race, for runners and walkers. It starts at 10:00 a.m. and that allows some of us ample time to show up for the 8:00 a.m. Group Run/Walk and do an abreviated run or walk as a warmup and then drive the 45 minutes to Boonville for the race. So,

NEXT SUNDAY, 5/2/10 (I told someone that is Mother's Day but it's not), 8:00 A.M., THE RON JAHELKA TRAIL (also known as Big River Road), along Big River, beginning 1/2 mile east of Hwy. One.

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M., RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M., VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

April 18, 2010

This morning's run/walk was on the MacKerricher Haul Road. You never know, when choosing a location for the next week's activity, just how the weather will be. MacKerricher can be terribly windy and even boring at times. We were lucky today, it was absolutely beautiful! It was 48, sunny and calm. The minus tide made for beautiful intertidal scenes and the wildflowers are beginning to bloom. John was at MacKerricher yesterday, similar to today's weather and thought this guy sort of typified the place and time. I think he got a pretty good shot:
Present this morning were: Steve G. and Orah and a guest, Susie, Hector, Charlene, Ron, Gay, Mark, Cindy, Jim, Laurie, Johnny, Brad, Kim, Adeline, Brian, John, Bob, Caleb, Cheryl, Neil, Scott, Maddelyn, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (27). Afterwards, 14 of us had a very nice breakfast at the Laurel Deli at the Depot.

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/25/10, 8:00 A.M., JACKSON STATE FOREST ROAD 400, HARE CREEK, beginning on Gravel Pit Road, which is out Hwy. 20, 2 1/4 miles, turn right and go about 100 yards to the locked yellow gate.

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M., RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M., VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

April 11, 2010

It was a pretty morning at Big River. Lots of birds were heard singing, things looked really green, clean and Springlike. We ran and walked The Ron Jahelka Trail. It was 48 degrees at the start and there was a fairly good southeasterly breeze, driving what felt like ice water into our faces. It rained heavily throughout and made for a good test of raingear. I think everybody's raingear failed today's test. Johnny was the smartest, foregoing any extra rain clothing and running, as usual, in shorts and tank. To clean the mud off after the run, Johnny went all the way into Big River! It's got to be about 55 degrees right now (water temp)! I was amazed!

Present this morning were: Nancy and Roger, Charlene, Ron, Kim, John, Bob, Johnny, Brad, Nancy and Tom (11). Afterwards, 6 of us enjoyed the Bayview Cafe for breakfast.

Thanks to all that voted on their preferred website design. Instead of a web site, Brad is creating a blog. It will look and function much the same but be easier to manage. Look for it to start in a month or so. We think it will be just as easy as receiving an e-mail and will also make it possible for out of town visitors to find and join us.

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/18/10, 8:00 A.M., MACKERRICHER HAUL ROAD, beginning at the south end of the Pudding Creek Trestle (go west on Elm St. to it's end, turn right on Glass Beach Road, it ends at the trestle).

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M., RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M., VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

April 4, 2010 - Easter Sunday

It was one of those Easter mornings that you woke up and said, geeezus, look at this rain, nobody's going to run or walk this morning and for sure the Easter Bunny won't show. To my surprise, upon arriving at Hare Creek, it was reported that the Easter Bunny and a Helper Bunny had been seen racing off and laying eggs!

John properly advised us to watch for a suspicious person and posted the area with the attached "Wanted" poster. Then he and Joel raced off after the bunnies. They must have caught up with them, here's proof:
All in all, we had a great, wet, cold and fun Easter Egg Hunt/Run/Walk. Present were (several seen wearing bunny ears): guests, David and Cam, Brad, Johnny, Elaine, Deb, Sam, Larry, Cindy, Jim, Charlene, Ron, Joel, Nancy B., Rick B., John, Kennedy, Maddelyn, Scott, Kim, Nancy and Tom (22). Here's some of them:
NEXT SUNDAY, 4/11/10, 8:00 A.M.: THE RON JAHELKA TRAIL (Big River Logging Road), along Big River, beginning 1/2 mile east of Hwy. One.

TUESDAYS, 7:00 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of it's south end.

THURSDAYS, 7:00 A.M.: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

March 28, 2010

OK, it was a nice day. A really nice day. We came home, and spent the rest of the day out in the yard. So now you get your report. Tom knows it's difficult to find good help, let alone inexpensive help, and it doesn't get a lot cheaper than this. Anyway, you should have been outside too, not reading email.

This morning there was a larger group, clearly gearing up for the Easter Egg Hunt next Sunday. Van Damme was a little squishy in places, but after getting past the smoke of a few early campfires, it was gorgeous as usual. Present were Fran, Charlene, Ron, Gay, Mark, Maddie, Scott, Kim, Bob, Melissa, John, Elaine, Deb, Sam, Brad and Johnny (16). Sam and Deb were our ambassadors to Whitesboro Grange this morning, so they still count. Five us had a good breakfast at Bayview Cafe.

NEXT SUNDAY, 4/4/1 (EASTER SUNDAY EASTER EGG HUNT): Jackson State Forest Road 450 (along the north side of Hare Creek) beginning on Simpson Lane. Go east on Simpson Lane 1.9 miles, where you'll see a large parking area and gate on left. The Easter Bunny's knee is good again, and he went shopping early for variously-shaped-chocolaty-and-sugary-things to stuff in plastic eggs. Remember too, kids are always fine, but this hunt was started for you deprived adults, so wear your big kid bonnet, bring your big kid basket, and get ready to act like the big kids that you really are.

TUESDAYS, 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

THURSDAYS, 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

March 21, 2010

Another fine but small group today on the Caspar Logging Road trails. Present this morning were: John, Marc, Fran, Orah, Steve, Hector, Joel and Johnny (8). Afterwards, we all went our separate ways.

A lot of things are blooming, and so it was fitting that yesterday was the official first day of Spring. It was a pleasant 48 degrees at the start. Skies? I think that's where all the sprinkles were coming from, but at least the trails weren't flooded. Anyway, I hope everyone has set their clocks forward by now. Or you ran/raced yesterday in the Whale Run. Or, you're saving yourself for the Easter Egg Hunt....?

Also thanks to John, for this Special News Report, Fort Bragg 2010 Whale Run Competition Walk and Run:
With Nancy on a mean walking pace and Marc running very fast we had 2 winners in the group representing the Fog Dodgers.....With this "World Wide" Competition it was fierce challenges from out of town folks.....We had Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, Willits, just to name a few of the many participants and very fast runners and walkers.

Nancy walked record pace time amidst heavy competition. Marc struggled along to make a great showing in his age division. Bob got a "Bronze" for his record breaking run, and of all,

Laurie came it "Gold" for her record pace on the 10K!

TWO MORE WEEKS (UNTIL TOM & NANCY RETURN) SCHEDULE:

NEXT SUNDAY, 3/28/10, 8 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

SUNDAY, 4/4/10 (EASTER SUNDAY EASTER EGG HUNT), Jackson State Forest Road 450 (along the north side of Hare Creek) beginning on Simpson Lane. Go east on Simpson Ln. 1.9 miles, large parking area and gate on left. The Easter Bunny's knee is good again, and he went shopping early for variously-shaped-chocolaty-and-sugary-things to stuff in plastic eggs. Remember too, kids are always fine, but this hunt was started for you deprived adults, so wear your big kid bonnet, bring your big kid basket, and get ready to act like the big kids that you are.

TUESDAYS, 7 AM: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

THURSDAYS, 7 AM: VAN DAMME STATE PARK, beginning at the beach.

March 14, 2010

A small group met this morning at Hare Creek. Perhaps small due to the time change or maybe the temperature. It was 35 degrees at the start but felt a little colder than that. The skies were clear and calm though, so it was a pretty Spring-like morning. Hare Creek was running well and looked beautiful.

Present this morning were: Rick, Bob, John, Melissa, Nancy B., Rick B., Laurie (arrived PST!), Joel, Fran, Nancy and Tom (11). Afterwards, four of us enjoyed breakfast at David's Restaurant in The Boatyard Center.

THREE WEEK SCHEDULE:(save this, not sure if there will be a report or reminder for the next week or two. Nancy and I won't be here for a week or two.)

NEXT SUNDAY, 3/21/10, 8:00 A.M.: CASPAR LOGGING ROAD, JSF RD. 500, beginning at the junction of JSF Road 500 and 600, about 2 miles east of Hwy. One. Go east on Fern Creek Rd.
