GLASS BEACH

This morning we had overcast skies, 47 degrees (felt like 41) and a very flat ocean.  We walked the Coastal Trail from Glass Beach going south to the bay that is/was Fort Bragg Landing.  The wildflowers are nearing their peak, lots of California Poppies.

MENDOCINO HEADLANDS

Walking today:  Kim, Doug, Mary, Charlene, Eric, Mark, John, Sky, Nancy and Tom (10).  And then for breakfast at St. Anthony's, we were joined by Fran, Jean, Beth and Bob D.  I think the overnight weather, heavy downpours, kept some people home.  It also made for nice walking conditions, as only one car passed us during our walk, and the area's grass and wildflowers are lush and growing like crazy!  A rainbow over the ocean topped it all off.

CASPAR LOGGING ROAD

Several regular members are away but there was a decent showing at CASPAR LOGGING ROAD. Hiking were Barbara, John, Joe, Kelly, Eric, Shari, Charlene, Mark, and Jean. We took the side trail on the south for a change and then continued up the road before turning back. The Rhodies are starting to bloom.

Afterwards three of us wen to the Home Style for breakfast.

Shari was taking some photos. Maybe I can add them to the blog.

NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD

We had a smaller group today:  Jean, Fran, Beth, Bob, John, Sky, Charlene, Deb, Sam, Eric, Nancy and Tom (12).  It was pretty cold at the start, 41 degrees, but without any wind, it was good for walking.

WARD AVENUE

We arrived at Ward Avenue to an eerie, light, graveyard fog.  You could see some nice waves but not much further out to sea.  As we walked,  it warmed and cleared up as the sun came out and we had a  pleasant walk.  A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter made several passes along our route while we walked, as evidently a distress flare had been seen and reported last night.  I don't think we know what the problem may have been or if there even had been one.

John has given us some very nice photos, as usual, thanks John.

MENDOCINO HEADLANDS

We had another large group of Fog Dodgers walking earlier this morning along the MENDOCINO HEADLANDS and through the town before very many people were out and about. Twenty of us enjoyed clear skies, mild temps and NO wind. Those present were Lynne, Sky, Eric, Deb, Sam, Bob, Fran, Mark, Shari, Doug, Kim, Richard, Chris, Dave, Charlene, Jeff, Diane, Brok, Eve, Gary. 

Many of us enjoyed the pancake breakfast at St. Anthony's after the walk.

BIG RIVER

It was a mild, overcast morning with no wind to speak of, so our walk up the Big River Road was very enjoyable. Of course the company made it even better. There were 17 of us this morning, including Diana, Jeff, Sky, Eric, John, Mark, Sam, Deb, Dave, Chris, Charlene, Lynne, Barbara, Shari, Bob, Claudette, and Gary. After the walk, many of us went to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church for their breakfast fundraiser for the Youth Group's project trip to Canyon de Chelly, AZ.

NAVARRO RIDGE ROAD

There were 12 of us this morning.  We walked on Navarro Ridge Road.  It was forecasted to be cloudy and very windy and that is how it was, but not quite as windy as predicted.

Present were: Diana, Jeff, Eric, Joe, Deb, Sam, Beth, Bob, Sky, Charlene, Nancy and Tom (12).

For the last couple of years there has been a benefit pancake breakfast in Mendocino.  Those that attended report that it was very good.  Please read the next paragraph, a message that Jean has sent and hopefully have a great time.

From Jean: 

I am hoping that the FD could walk Big River on Sunday, March 1, then go to the pancake breakfast that the “Ordinary Radical” youth group is putting on at the Presbyterian church in Mendocino. This will be the third one that they have put on. They are raising money for a trip to the Navajo Nation to build fences and help out in what ever way they can. It is a donation breakfast so encourage everyone to donate generously to a good cause.

 

Unfortunately I will be missing a few walks as I recuperate from my melanoma/plastic surgery. Not sure when I will be able to return.

CASPAR LOGGING ROAD

When it comes to dodging the fog, we are fearless.  Seems different though when it comes to dodging the rain.  Only four of us showed up to walk in the rain today:  Eric, Charlene, Nancy and myself.  Since I get to write the blog today, I'm giving the four of us 25 Bonus Points and a Gold Star.

                                           

                                               

 I've saved some of John's pictures through the years but none of those I have represented today quite right, so I'm just throwing a few that I liked onto the blog here.  Top left;  the Whistle Bouy you hear when you are near Noyo.  Top right, a nice photo of a Great Bliue Heron and a Great Egret dining together; and the bottom photo is of the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse.

Over breakfast this morning, really good by the way. we decided that next Sunday will be the Fourth Sunday of the month and therefore we should meet at the Whitesboro Grange.   Now, looking at the 10 Day weather forecast on Weather Underground, I find that the rainfall prediction for Sunday is 1.12 inches, and there is over four inches of rain next week leading up to Sunday.  All I can say is, wear your rain gear, and join us for a great Pancake Breakfast next Sunday.

MENDOCINO HEADLANDS

We had a large group getting together for our walk along the MENDOCINO HEADLANDS. It was cloudy and a little breezy as we walked along Heezer Dr and then through the sleepy town. We saw about 3 people, 2 cars and 1 cat. On the walk were Eric, Kelly, Sky, Barbara, Deb, Sam, John, Mark, Lynne, Chris, Diana, Jeff, Joe, Fran Jean, Richard (new), Nancy, Tom, Kim, Doug, Beth, Bob, Charlene, Eve and Gary (25).

The many of us went to the St Anthony's Pancake Breakfast in Mendocino afterward.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

The walk up the creek at VAN DAMME was nice and cool as might be expected this time of year. The path is pretty eroded from flooding of the creek but we did not encounter any broken bridges, though signs warned of such. one wonders if the trail will ever be restored. Hiking were Barbara, Tom (no Nancy), Beth, Bob, Charlene, Mark, Sky, Eve, Gary, Jean, Fran, John, and Joe (13).

The breakfast was at the Good Life Cafe in Mendocino.
