The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

NOYO HEADLANDS PARK - NORTH

Memorial Day weekend, 2016

A beautiful morning!  54 degrees, full sunshine and just a slight breeze.  Thank you, Charlene and Ron, for bringing family and friends, five of them!  There was Charlene's grand-son, Brett, his wife (and I'm sorry for forgetting her name), and two children, Mia and Gavin, nice family!  They also brought a friend, Rosina.

Also present today:  Jan, Cheryl N., Neil, Nancy B., Rick, Joe, Martha, Bill, Jordan, Deb, Sam, Mary, Katie (coincidentally or just late?), John, Nancy and Tom (23).

Pink rose
Thanks to John, for today's photos.

Ten of us went to breakfast at David's, where we also saw Susan and Bruce.

Next week's run/walk will take us to the south half of the new Coastal Trail.  Today, we were on the north half.  It is going to be so nice, when the two halves are connected.  I think that will give us several options when using this venue and certainly make it easier to choose a meeting place that can satisfy all.  In the mean time, if anyone has a special request, we will certainly consider it.  Some new venues would also be nice but there are several things to consider; parking, dog friendly, footing, distance, etc.

WARD AVENUE

It was a gorgeous morning, half cloudy and half sunny, 53 degrees and calm.  There was a light, misty fog when we began.   We met at Ward Avenue, some went north along the beach and some went south, along the Haul Road.

A town full of bikes today
Maybe some of you remember six years ago, when we ran and walked on Navarro Ridge Road on the Sunday of the California 10,000?   That was the day that these dirt bikes all went past us on their way back to Willows or wherever.  Johnny looked up the name of the ride, "California ...." and I added the 10,000, because it seemed there were that many bikes!  As it is each 4th Sunday in May, town was full of them today.  We're smarter now.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

A bit of history, today we met at "The Scales", on Road 500.  They aren't there any longer but there used to be truck scales that weighed all the logging trucks coming out of Caspar Creek watershed.  Now, it's just a great wide spot for parking and meeting.

It was a good morning, just right for running and walking, overcast skies, calm and 54 degrees.  I was happy to be back after missing several weeks because I was on "light duty".

We had two guests today and  they set a new Fog Dodger record, for being from the furthest away of any guests.    Thanks Shari and Peter, for bringing along Matsumoto & Kobayashi, both here all the way from Japan.

Others that were present today:  Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Toni, Joe, Tom T., Neil, Gay, Mark, Cyd (sort of), John, Cheryl, Laura, Susan, Bruce, Nancy and Tom (22).

Fourteen of us went to David's for breakfast.  The food there is always great.  My favorite waitress, Simone, is graduating on June 10 and will be moving on near the end of August.  We will miss her.

I've been asked to mention an event coming up on Saturday, June 4th, one day only, that the dead and beached blue whale from a couple of years ago, is now a cleaned and reassembled skeleton and will be on display out on the Noyo Headlands Park - South Trail.  I think we'll schedule our run/walk there on Sunday the 5th but to see the whale skeleton, you'll have to go out there on Saturday the 4th.  This should be one impressive skeleton!

SUNDAY, MAY 22ND, WARD AVENUE (I earlier reported a much lower tide.  It will be -0.6 at 6:30 a.m., not the -1.2 I reported, still good for beach running and walking)

SUNDAY, MAY 29TH, NOYO HEADLANDS PARK - NORTH
SUNDAY, JUNE 5TH, NOYO HEADLANDS PARK - SOUTH

NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 22ND @ 8:00 A.M.:  WARD AVENUE

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD.

PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

The last time we walked and ran the Pudding Creek Trestle was December 27th of 2015. Between the new Pomo Bluffs and Noyo Bay and Noyo Headlands Parks North and South, our old go to route has been abandoned. Today there has been a plethora of abalone divers all along the coast including Noyo Bay and Headlands parks. There were also families at the motels along the Pudding Creek Trestle route enjoying the lowest tide of the year. Pudding Creek was very low this morning too.

Today we had only eleven walkers and three runners. No one went to David's for breakfast today so we all we our separate ways either for a Mother's Day breakfast or getting ready to go up to Westporte for the rubber ducky competition.

-->John Loomis provided me with several lovely photos, two are terrific shots of the Pudding Creek Trestle Bridge and two others are colorful shots of a garden and a delightful mail box.
As John noted, it was a perfect day for running and walking. A nice coastal Mother’s Day, to be enjoyed by all. It was a little misty, with cloud cover, but not too warm, and not too cold. Three runners made their way to Mackerricher, with Jeff in the front, and Jan following suit. I came in a 3rd place only to catch up and split ways at Mackerricher. Winding the way back along the bluffs, the low tide filled the air with scents of abalone, and iodine kelp flavors. Many abalone pickers were out in force looking for that golden ticket, the 7 inch ab clinging to the wet rocks.

Great angle of the bridge.

POMO BLUFFS PARK - NOYO BAY

We were last at this venue on March 20th.  Oh, how different it was today.  Last time, a heavy rain and very strong headwinds, today, sunny, calm and 53 degrees.  It was a beautiful morning!  There was a thin and very low, ocean-hugging fog that gave the feel and smell of being near the ocean.

Sunrise on Noyo Bay, John was there earlier than most, thanks  John.
Present today:  Keith, Nancy T., Roger, Cheryl N., Neil, John, Charlene, Ron, Jeff, Susan, Toni, Joe, Mary, Shari, Peter, Orah, Steve, Greg, Nancy and Tom (20).

This guy (?) was there the entire time.  The day was just that nice!
I was on light duty today.  Sure wish that I could have run.  It was nice though, to be loafing and sightseeing.  I read the interpretive signs and enjoyed the park's trails.  It is such a pretty place now, whereas in the past, it was a place the kids went mudding in their 4 X 4's.

John left early and went to Boonville and ran the Boontling Classic 5K.  He did very well and it was very hot!  Congratulations John!

I've been asked to mention an event coming up on Saturday, June 4th, one day only.  I'll get more information on it later but I do know for sure, that the dead and beached blue whale from a couple of years ago, is now a cleaned and reassembled skeleton and will be on display out on the Noyo Headlands Park - South Trail.  I think we'll schedule our run/walk there on Sunday the 5th but to see the whale skeleton, you'll have to go out there on Saturday the 4th.  This should be one impressive skeleton!
