The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

POMO BLUFFS, NOYO BAY

I forgot to check the temperature this morning, as I got out of the car, but I believe it was 52 degrees with overcast skies.  That's good for running and walking.  We met at Pomo Bluffs Park and had a nice run or walk across the Noyo Bridge and out around Johnson Rock on the new Noyo Headlands Trail - South.

Thanks to John, for this morning's photos, very colorful!  The seagull shot, he named "Tom's Seagull" because it is one we saw at Big River on Thursday and I mentioned how picturesque it was.

If John had been just a tad slower this morning, he would have seen two river otters.  Ron's sharp eye's spotted those and pointed them out to me.

Present today:  Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Joe, Fran, Charlene, Ron, John, Chandra, Jan, Susan, Bruce and Tom (14).  Afterwards, we were joined by Nancy and grand-daughter Aliya for breakfast at David's.

I think Chandra was hoping for Laura to be present, so she would have someone running her pace (fast!)  It made me realize, that I haven't put in the effort to keep the running part of our group going strong.  I'm guessing that we have 15-20 runners but on any given Sunday, only a half dozen show up.  If any of you know of someone interested in running, please invite them to join with us.

Pudding Creek Trestle

Due to my gullibility, Nancy B conned me into writing this blog.  As I already had my Sunday planned, I apologize for the tardiness of this blog.
A mist shrouded Pudding Creek Trestle (John Loomis)
Wild flowers John picked this morning

The fog was quite thick this morning with an air temperature of 52 degrees.  The ocean was very calm and because of the cloud cover, the beaches were pretty empty except for a few brave souls.

Pudding Creek is being held in by a sand bank, so it’s not flowing out to the ocean. But did you notice how full of water the basin under the trestle has become. Pudding Creek east of the trestle was clear of algea and other crud that normally makes it look quite uninviting.

Nancy B. also promised to send me a list of attendees (Nancy, you're now in my little book!), so here's my best guess. There was Nancy B, Rick, Joe, Nancy T, Roger, Peter, Charlene, Ron, Bruce, Susan, John and a couple of late arrivals, whose names I don’t know, sorry.

A group of 10 of us had breakfast at David’s.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

John had a very busy week, including taking his son to the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra yesterday, so he brought a few photos out of his files, taken at Van Damme, but as you can see, at a different season.  As always, they are really nice and the blog wouldn't look too good without John's pics!  It's my guess, these were all taken in winter.  Beautiful!

J. Loomis photo, hunting or fishing

It was better weather for running and walking this morning, 55 and overcast at our start.   My main reason for choosing this venue today, was to find out it the needed repairs had been made to the Fern Canyon Trail.  They haven't and so we will not return to Van Damme for our Thursday runs.  It's a pretty trail, but not too good for running anymore.

J. Loomis photo, looks pretty cold!
Thanks to Nancy and Rick B., for bringing Gwyn.  Also present:  Deb, Sam, Toni, Joe, Nancy T., Roger, Fran, Barbara, John, Jan, Nancy and Tom (15).

If you made it as far as bridge 3, you saw this plaque, placed in memory of a young CCC worker that was killed in an accident while building the bridges we crossed this morning.  I always knock on the railing as I cross bridge 3 and say, "Hi Russell".

Noyo Headlands Trail - South

It was really a beautiful morning!  At our 8:00 a.m. start it was 57 degrees with a slight breeze.  There was a narrow belt of high fog over us but it was clear out over the ocean and to the east.  As we walked and ran, the fog quickly burned off, revealing beautiful blue skies.  The ocean and whitewater were clear and a little rough.

John took some harbor photos today, thanks John!  John also brought his son, Nicholas.  Thanks for coming Nicholas, you're a good runner!

Present this morning, along with Gay and Mark, was Texas Susan.  Also present:  Zelda, Susan, Bruce, Shari, Nancy B., Rick, Jan, Charlene, Ron, Toni, Nancy and Tom (17).

We haven't ran and walked at Van Damme State Park for a long time, mainly because the trails had fallen trees and lots of muddy puddles.  It should be good now that summer is in high gear so we will try it out next Sunday.  It's a beautiful creekside trail with 10 picturesque bridge crossings of the creek.  Those wanting to walk with their dog, can walk the campgrounds, upper and lower, and also walk the beach.

WARD AVENUE

Happy Fourth of July to all!  It was a great morning to be out running and walking.  It was sunny, 53 degrees and a breeze of maybe 4 mph from the south.  It felt kind of cool starting out into the breeze but warm coming back.

J. Loomis photo

Ron chose to run on the beach and missed his turn-around spot since the creek had dried up.  Four of us ran on the Haul Road.  Both John and Ron noticed the busy seagulls just offshore.  John was anxious to get back with his surf net.

Present today was Sue (Susan?) from Texas, thanks to Gay and Mark (also present), Toni, Charlene, Ron, Fran, Greg, Susan, Bruce, Jan, John, Nancy B., Rick, Bill, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy and Tom (19).

J. Loomis photo, I think we have a theme going here.

Next Sunday, we get to run/walk on our newest Coastal Trail, the Noyo Headlands Park - South.  It's access road is just across the highway from Taco Bell.  It's a nice trail with some great ocean views.  Check out Johnson Rock and sit on the bench for a moment, amazing!

J. Loomis photo

Nine of us had breakfast at David's.  We are all thankful to Toni, for calling in a reservation, as David's is getting busier all the time, especially on holiday weekends.  Great food and service!
