The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

COASTAL TRAIL - SOUTH

This morning was chilly at about 43 degrees when we started, but it was a beautiful, clear day with the waves sparkling in the sun. We had a great walk/run up past the Noyo Center's Crow's Nest Interpretive Center and back.

WARD AVENUE

It was an amazing morning!  A mix of high and low clouds were constantly changing colors and shapes over a stormy ocean that made the whole thing feel as though we were in a Imax Theater.  It was 55 degrees, I think, when we started and it was just another perfect morning!

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

Hwy. One Bridge at Van Damme, J. Loomis photo
It was a very pretty morning and also comfortable at 55 degrees with no wind.  There's a forecast for rain this evening and tomorrow and all would say, we are long overdue for that.

We knew that the trail in Fern Canyon would be eroded badly, so no surprise there.  Nobody got stung by a yellow jacket, perhaps because it was still cool and early.  Nancy and our friend, Tony, each got stung near Bridge 9 a couple of weeks ago.  All in all, it was a great morning!

Present this morning: Catherine, David, Charlene, Ron, Nancy T., Toni, Joe (and an old friend of Joe's, Leslie, for breakfast), Deb, Fran, Nancy B., Sam, John, Barbara, Nancy and Tom (15).

Thanks John, for today's photos.

PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

Pudding Creek Trestle

Another  beautiful morning!  It was 57 degrees, sunny and calm at 8:00 this morning at MacKerricher State Park.  It's been an unbelievable summer weather-wise.

Jan returned from Ukiah for the day.  It was nice to run with her again.  Also present:  Fran, Nancy T.,  Shari, Peter, Cindy, John, Bob, Nancy and Tom (10).

John got some really nice photos today, showing just how pretty and calm the morning was.  Thanks, John.

Next Sunday, we will go to Van Damme State Park.  It's been a long time since we've gone there.  The last time, March 24, we found that we couldn't go beyond Bridge 7 due to a large puddle completely over the trail from "wall to wall" and the trail badly eroded up to there.  It is still eroded badly but we can run and walk on it but must be careful.  There are also some agressive yellow jackets up around Bridge 9, beyond where most walkers would turn around.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

We had two things going this morning, Caspar Logging Road and the Noyo Headlands Race.

Healdsburg Tony, Bob, Nancy and Tom went to the race, where it was as foggy as John's photos above depict it.  Hopefully, those runners from out of town could stick around long enough to see the views they missed during the race.  Tony and Nancy were First Place in their Divisions while Bob was Third, well done!

All photos from J. Loomis, thank you!

Running and walking on the Caspar Logging Road were: Charlene, Shari, Peter, Cindy, Nancy T., Neil, John, Sue, Bruce and Toni.

Yesterday (Saturday the 31st), we went for a run on the Van Damme Fern Canyon Trail.  It still has some serious erosion where the creek has run down the trail, but it can be run on and I think walking would be fine.  I'll try to schedule it back in to our rotation as long as the rain doesn't begin.  When it rains, it will again be unsafe.

NEXT SUNDAY, SEPT. 8TH @ 8:00 A.M.: PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, GROUP RUN @ 7:00 A.M.: BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD ON TUESDAY AND HEESER DRIVE/MENDOCINO ON THURSDAY.
