The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

It's a nice day here on the coast.  Thank you to John L., for today's photos.  The blog would look pretty bad without all of the pictures that John shares with us.  He's got an eye that is always looking for something interesting  and I think that some of us don't share that trait.

A nice day on the coast made even nicer because we had three new people show up today.  Welcome Fred, Keith and Greg.  We hope that you found the walk or run agreeable and that you'll come back again.

I forgot to check the temperature this morning, too excited I guess, at the prospect of new Fog Dodgers!  I think it was about 50 and sunny.  Not too windy in the forest but lots of white caps on the ocean.

Also present today:  Chuck, Jeff, Gay, Mark, Toni, Joe, Nancy B., Rick, Nancy T., Roger, Mary, Bob, Cyd (running today after running the Mendo 50 yesterday!), Cheryl, John, Nancy and Tom (20).  I think I've missed somebody, I'm sorry.

Next week's run/walk is a nice one, I think.  I like the view as we cross the Noyo Bridge, even though I always feel as though I'm going to throw myself over the railing!  I don't understand that phobia thing.

13 of us went to David's for breakfast, where we met Jamie and Sheila.

I've been asked to mention an event coming up on Saturday, June 4th, one day only.  I'll get more information on it later but I do know for sure, that the dead and beached blue whale from a couple of years ago, is now a cleaned and reassembled skeleton and will be on display out on the Noyo Headlands Park - South Trail.  I think we'll schedule our run/walk there on Sunday the 5th but to see the whale skeleton, you'll have to go out there on Saturday the 4th.  This should be one impressive skeleton!

Noyo Headlands Park - North

I
Pudding Creek Trestle, Thanks to John L. for all of today's photos
It was a great morning!  Everyone thought so.  At our 8:00 a.m. start, it was 49 degrees but without any breeze and clear sunny skies, it felt like 70!  Almost too hot for running but perfect for walking and just being out!
California Valley Quail
There were beautifully shaped waves for the surfers, lots of wildflowers and Ron was happy to see "his" cormorant colony!  He's been keeping track of this colony for many years.  I'd bet he's got names for each one of them!
Ferret, out for walk also
I tried to talk/recruit  a couple of runners into joining us but I must have come off as some weirdo, they both ignored me.  Actually, they had ear buds in and those things kind of make you oblivious to the world.
How many more years?
Present this morning:  Neil, Cindy, Jim, Martha, Bill, Fran, Charlene, Ron, Jan, John, Mary, Toni, Joe, Susan, Bruce, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Cheryl, Nancy and Tom (22).

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:  (I do this to make it easier for guest bloggers and to avoid repeating the same venue too often.  If you're wondering why we don't go to a certain venue very often, it's probably because of mosquitoes, "No Dog" rules, loose rocks, mud puddles or something we all hate.)

WARD AVENUE

All of today's photos from J. Loomis, thanks John!
As the photo above shows, it was a grey morning.  In picking the location for today, I saw that there was a -0.9 low tide right at 8:00, just right for a run or walk on the beach!  Upon arrival, the weather seemed to go right along with it being just right, 52 degrees, overcast and calm.  For a few of us though, it didn't work out as well as hoped.  It seems the winter weather has altered the beach, removing sand and creating quite a slope of loose, black sand.  I hope it was better for the walkers.

Nancy T., Roger, Susan, Bruce, Joel, Jan, Cindy, Jim, Shari, Peter, John, Chandra (started from home but stopped by to say hi), Zelda, Nancy and Tom (26).

While talking this morning, I realized that I had not taken the Big River mosquitoes into account on future walks.  They're not a problem if you're running, as we do on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but if you are walking, they'll eat you alive!  I think therefore, that we will skip Big River on Sundays for awhile.  Also, there is some construction coming up on Big River, so I think it will be closed anyway.

VAN DAMME STATE PARK

It was a beautiful Spring morning at Van Damme.  When we started out, it was 48 degrees, clear and calm.

The Fern Canyon Trail is passable but just barely.  To do the three miles in it's entirety,  is very pretty but does involve going over or under a half dozen fallen trees.  When I chose this for the run/walk, I thought that the trail would be cleared by now.  I heard this morning though, that it could be mid-August before chainsaws could be run, due to nesting endangered birds.

J. Loomis photo
As for other trail news, I hear that the rock slide on Big River Road has been cleared, so we can resume running and walking there.  I think though, that come August, it will again closed for repair work.

With the fallen trees at Van Damme, and the poison oak at Russian Gulch, we have again decided, to do the Tuesday and Thursday morning group runs at Big River.
