The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

It was a very cold night, especially so when you get back away from the ocean.  At Pudding Creek Trestle though, it was not quite so cold but still chilly at 38.  Everyone was anxious to get going to exercise the chill.   Cyd had already finished her first mile warm-up split.

J. Loomis photo

Rod brought his daughter, Lindsey, a lovely young lady.  She has run with us before, thank you both!  Thank you also for the beautiful sunrise photo!

Also present this morning:  Fran, Cyd, Neil, Nancy B., Rick, Toni, Joe, Nancy T., Roger, Chandra, Melissa, Katie, Cheryl, Oh so fast Laura, Bob, John, Nancy and Tom (20).

J. Loomis photo

Thanks, Lindsey, for this sunrise!

We all chose to go north at the start and we were rewarded with a beautiful morning.  The grass is now finally greening, making things so much prettier.  Combining with the green grass, we had seas and clouds of all colors, just a very pretty morning!

Big River Logging Road

John has been busy the past six weeks and unable to run with us.  He has however, continued running and kept himself very busy with Zumba and running even more than before.  I'm happy to say that he will rejoin us on Tuesday.  Throughout his absence he's continued to send his pictures.  Thank you John!

There was a steady rain this morning, fairly heavy at times and it was 43 degrees when we started at 8:00.  Ron had to work this morning, so when he and Charlene arrived in the middle of a downpour, they decided to bail out, probably a wise choice.

A harbor view, J. Loomis photo

Others present and taking in all the rain were:  Nancy B., Rick, Toni, Joe, Laura, Joel, Bob, Cyd, Janis, Melissa, Katie, Cheryl,Nancy and Tom (14).  Interestingly, 10 runners and 4 walkers, going along with my theory from last week, that runners were more dedicated than walkers.  Take that as a challenge walkers!

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

J. Looms photo

It rained thru most of the night and by 7 or so this morning, it was getting kind of windy and so I didn't expect too many would make it to this morning's run/hike.  Runners seem to me, to be more dedicated (or crazy!) and so I expect more runners than walkers on days like this.  That was almost the case today.  Present for the run: Melissa, Katie, Cyd, Nancy and Tom.  Present for the hike:  Zelda, Barbara, Nancy B.,  Susan and Bruce.  A tie, 5-5.  Missing were Charlene and Ron that couldn't get out of the driveway for a fallen tree.

J. Loomis photo
Now, breakfast is another story.  Everyone comes out for food!  Mark and Gay's home is beautiful and comfortable.  We've had several wonderful potlucks there before and today's was also excellent.
There was a lot of delicious food and good company.  Gay kept Greg busy cooking waffles while she showed many of us The Surprise.  With all of the side dishes brought by the group and the cookies to be exchanged, there was no shortage of food!  Thank you Mark and Gay!  It was perfect!

Present for breakfast:  Cheryl, Neil, Pat, Leon, Fran, Geri, Norma, Charlene, Ron, Toni, Joe, Shari, Peter, Nancy T., Roger, Greg, Mike, Gay, Mark, Deb, Sam and seven of those above (28).

Noyo Headlands Trail

Tom, I started the walk/run 20 seconds early, to at least give me something to say in the blog, and give you enough ammunition to fire me from writing blogs in the future!.  However, as it turned out, I found quite a bit to write about.

Noyo Headlands Trail Map
It was an overcast morning, but warm at 55°.  We had a few showers on the walk/run, but nothing too serious. The new trail had some quite spectacular views of waves breaking over rock outcrops out in the ocean, particularly off Johnson Point.  There seemed to be adequate parking, but we'll see when the visitors arrive next summer. Parking at Glass Beach for the North Trail, was almost impossible this last summer, but at least additional parking has now been added.

Trail Visitor
There were some interesting seats along the trail, made by local artist, one that was a bit different had seats for 4 people, all facing different directions.  Joe suggested it could be for a dysfunctional family.  Another one, was hopefully waiting to be completed, as the bench seats were only attached by a few regular screws and one of the seats had already become detached!

I need to apologize to Neil, as Joe and I got into a long discussion on how to calculate the height above sea level you need to be, to see the horizon at 120 miles - the distance to Eureka where our closet weather radar is situated - no don't ask! Joe, the answer is about 10,000ft, see -  here. I guess as there was nothing about ailing bodies or sports in our discussion, Neil was quite bored.
We also were intrigued with the guy walking a small horse - the photo is courtesy of John.  The owner told us it was a Miniature Horse.  Earlier, I had been met with looks of derision and disbelief when I said I thought it might be a "Pit Pony" or "Shetland Pony".  So for those disbelievers, it turns out that the Shetland pony was the most common breed used as a 'pit' pony. Read about a pit pony here,  a Shetland pony here,  and a comparison between a miniature horse and a Shetland pony here.

Trail to Pomo Bluffs - click to enlarge
From the car park, the trail goes both left and right.  To the right, which is how most of us went, the trail goes north to Johnson Point and beyond.  At the end of the walk, Toni pointed out that had we turned left, it's possible to get all the way to Pomo bluffs.  I've included a map of this trail, and remember, clicking it will make it larger.

Don't forget, next week is the breakfast potluck and cookie exchange. Here's what Tom wrote in last week's blog - as a reminder

Gay told me this morning, that she will again do her Waffle Bar at our potluck breakfast/cookie exchange on the 13th.  So, don't bring waffles but anything else is fair game.  There's always lots of food and Mark and Gay are wonderful hosts.  An added bonus this year, is the "Incredible, Amazing and Beautiful Surprise" that they will show those that come.  I can't say more here but your children and grandchildren would also love it.  Mark will bring a few maps to our run/hike for those that haven't been to their home, or you can easily follow someone else, it's not too far from our run/hike.

WARD AVENUE

It was a beautiful, crisp and clear morning at MacKerricher.  It was 38 degrees with a 5 mph wind, but the ocean and surf were so pretty that we didn't notice the cold.
J. Loomis photo

John was away but still gave me a couple of photos for the blog.  Just telling you so that you'll understand why the pictures aren't always of the area of our run/hike.   I think that today's pictures were taken by John while in the Bay Area.  He titled this one  a cypress forest but they look like pine trees to me.  At least I can identify the two birds below, I think.

Sixth Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run and Walk

This morning, we had our Sixth Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run and Walk to benefit the local Food Bank.  It was a perfect morning weather wise for running and walking across the Noyo Bridge and up and down Main Street.
Original logo, Sam Elufson creation

There was conversation this morning regarding the Fog Dodgers and it's origins.  Deb thought of the name and Sam drew up the logo.  That was shortly after our beginning on July 26, 1998. On our first run were:  John Bailey, Tom Riley, Deb Elufson, Ute Luyties and Bill Adams.  There has been a group run/walk on every Sunday since then, every one of them!

Present today:  Chandra, Laura, Janis, Cheryl, Bob, Orah, Steve, Deb, Sam, Suzanne, Michelle, Toni, Susan, Bruce, Nancy and Tom (16).

J. Loomis photo

It was 51 degrees, mostly sunny and calm when we started this morning.  It was nice to see Chandra and Laura take off super fast, just as we used to do on the first few Bin-2-Bins.  It started off as a race but has evolved into a fun run and walk.  Someone said, that Chandra and Laura were off fast because younger people know how to work those  self checkout stands better, very true.

J. Loomis photo, Noyo River and harbor
We had fun this morning and we managed to help out the Food Bank.  I hope that everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.

Remember, Mark and Gay will host our annual  Holiday Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange on Sunday, Dec. 13th, immediately following the run/walk.  You needn't bring much, just any kind of a breakfast item.  Bring a plate of cookies, if you wish to participate in the Cookie Exchange.  You bring a plate of your cookies and then take home (mandatory!)  a plate of mixed cookies.  There's always plenty of food.  Making this year's breakfast especially nice is a "Special Tour" of something you just have to see to believe.  It's right there in their yard, we aren't going anywhere.  Can't tell you more because it's secret, just believe me, you don't want to miss this!  It's for the young and young at heart.  Chandra, bring Tenley and Chris.  Lisa and Tabi, bring Linnaea and Zavier.

Big River Logging Road

Mendocino Bay, J. Loomis photo
John's picture above shows how pretty the morning was.  It was 51 degrees with a pretty good northerly breeze and partially cloudy skies.  Once we got going up river, it was really a perfect morning to be out for a run or walk.

Big River Salmon Run, 11/14/15 , J. Loomis photo
Yesterday, about 10 Fog Dodgers ran in the Big River Salmon Run.  Tony and Janis were each  First Place in the 10K.  Five of us; Nancy, Bob, Tom, Cyd and Chandra were age group winners in the 5K and John, in a tougher division, was Second Place for the 5K.  John's caption above is only part of the story, but thanks John.  I should also add, that Chandra's husband Chris (not sure whether he has joined the Fog Dodgers on any Sundays ??), taking turns with Chandra pushing the baby jogger, got Third Place in his age group.

Big River, J. Loomis photo
Present today:  Deb, Sam,  Tony (Healdsburg), Toni, Joe, Fran, Neil, Jennifer, Nancy T., Roger, Cyd, John, Nancy and Tom (14).

Next Sunday, we will do our Sixth Annual Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run/Walk.  Meet in front of Harvest Market and be ready to go at 8:00.   You buy an item of food for the Food Bank and drop it in the bin there and then head to Safeway, buy another food item and drop it in their bin, then head to Purity if you're a runner or back to Harvest if you're walking.  You finish up by buying one last item at Harvest Market and putting it into their Food Bank bin.  These food items needn't cost much, just whatever you'd like to donate to the Food Bank.  Save your receipts, they are deductible on tax day.  No matter what the weather is like, running or walking across the Noyo Bridge early in the morning is really beautiful.  Total time usually 50-60 minutes.

NEXT SUNDAY, NOV. 22 @ 8:00 A.M.:  BOAT YARD CENTER, Bin-2-Bin-2-Bin Run/Walk, please read the above paragraph.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

Caspar Creek, J. Loomis photo
We had a nice morning for running and walking.  Rain fell during the night and after our run/walk, but we were fortunate to have 50 degrees, under mostly cloudy and calm skies.  I like the Caspar Logging Roads for a number of reasons;  there's lots of parking, dogs are allowed, minimal traffic and there several different directions that you can go.

Clipper ship, J. Loomis photo
After sitting all week and missing our regular Tuesday and Thursday runs, the uphill leg of Road 500 seemed much steeper today.   It's always nice to be in a group, it kind of pulls you along.

Caspar Bay, J. Loomis photo
Thanks to John Loomis for always making the blog look better  by sending in photos every week!  This week's "Clipper ship" was taken in Half Moon Bay by John.  The ship had earlier sailed past Fort Bragg on it's way south.  The other photos were all taken around Caspar.

PUDDING CREEK TRESTLE

A nice change this morning, rain!  It's a start and hopefully it signals a more normal winter for us.  We started Standard Time today but with the cloud cover, it was still pretty gloomy at 8:00 but a nice 59 degrees with a steady rain.

Pudding Creek Trestle, J. Loomis photo

Those that came out to welcome the rain and enjoy the morning were:  Susan, Bruce, Zelda, Joel, Bob, Toni, Joe, Charlene, Ron, Nancy and Tom (11).

There's a couple of noteworthy dates below.  On Dec. 1st, the South half of our new Coastal Trail officially opens.  So, on Dec. 6th, we will give it a try.  If you're not familiar with it, check the "our routes" tab above.

On Dec. 13th, we will have our Annual Fog Dodger Holiday Pot Luck Breakfast and Cookie Exchange.  Mark and Gaye are hosting it and also including a special Open House tour of their new addition.  I'm intentionally underplaying this for secrecy reasons, you really do not want to miss this morning.

CASPAR LOGGING ROADS

Another very nice morning for running and walking.  Mentions of rain are beginning to be heard on the weather forecasts, so we should be thankful for all the good days we've had and have the firewood ready for the winter ahead.  We will all be happy to see rain.  it was 54 degrees, calm and overcast this morning.  We were at Caspar Creek.

Jughandle Creek, J. Loomis photo

This is where it gets difficult.  With all of us arriving so punctually, and like clockwork, just before 8 (thank you all), and people milling all around and new guests to meet, I always feel as though I'm missing someone, but here goes.   First time guests Michelle, Jeff and Bill, it was a pleasure to meet each of you and we all hope that you'll return whenever you can.

Also present:  Sheila, Shari, Peter, Deb, Sam, Nancy B., Rick, Toni, Joe, John, Cheryl, Laura, Cyd, Gay, Mark, Tom T., Lisa, Tabi, Linnaea,  Zavier, Charlene, Ron, Joel, Neil, Nancy and Tom (29).

WARD AVENUE

MacKerricher State Park, J. Loomis photo

It was just right this morning for running and walking along the shore.  We met at Ward Avenue under mostly cloudy but warm (56 degree) skies.  The fog came and went while we were doing our thing and offered interesting views.  Thanks to John Loomis for this morning's photos, all taken just before we met.

It was nice to have Sara (it's been an hour since I asked her whether there's an "h" on the end or not and of course, I've forgotten her reply.  I'm going with no 'h' and she did say it didn't really matter) back with us.  Also present:  Susan, Bruce, Fran, Gay, Mark, Nancy T., Roger, Nancy B., Rick, Toni, Joe, Charlene, Ron, Joel, John, Shari, Peter, Nancy and Tom (20).

Yesterday, the Noyo Headlands 5K and 10K Races took place.  It's a small race but it was a good opportunity to see the south half of the new Coastal Trail.  Though small, it was an accurate course and fairly flat.  Fog Dodgers did really well.  Earning First Place in their divisions were;  Janis (10K), John, Tabi, Nancy and Tom (all 5K).  Marc was First Place overall in the Race Walk!  Also in the 5K, Chandra got Second Place and Lisa a Third Place!

BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD

Mendocino, J. Loomis photo

Another great day on the Mendocino Coast!   It was 54, sunny, with a thin fog along the coast, and again no rain anywhere in sight.  I actually have a friend that doesn't believe the climate is changing.  You don't bother debating with a friend like that!  He says that the glaciers are not getting smaller.  Oh well.

Several Fog Dodgers received these photos and a page promoting Thanksgiving's  Fog Dodger coffee.  They  will donate 25% of their sales of this brand to the Mendocino Land Trust.  I like the name.

You tell me.  J. Loomis photo

Thanks to Lisa and Tabi.  Besides bringing Linnaea and Zavier, they brought guests, Libby and Reed.  Joel came today as a runner instead of bike rider.  He said that he's getting back into it, but he ran as though he never got too far out of it.  He's been recovering from injuries for quite awhile.  Also present:  Fran, Pat, Leon, Nancy B., Rick, Deb, Sam, Orah, Steve, Shari, Peter, Nancy T., Roger, John, Bob J., Susan, Bruce, Sheila, Joe, Nancy and Tom (28).

J. Loomis photo
Coincidentally, I read yesterday, that spiders spin two different kinds of silk.  The "spokes" are stronger and not sticky, the spirals are not as strong but very sticky, meant to catch things.  Spiders walk on their tip-toes to avoid getting stuck.  How's that?

Fall,  J. Loomis photo

Next Saturday is the Noyo Run and Wellness Festival.  If you want to run or walk the new (South half) Coastal Trail, this is your chance.  It's not officially opened yet but the City is allowing the race to use it.  Besides the Race/Walk, the Hospital is offering lots of Health Screenings and those things are free, whether or not you go to the race.  It's all good!

Thanks to John, for keeping the Fog Dodgers supplied with great photos!
