The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

Daylight Delight

"Walking is falling forward. Each step we take is an arrested plunge, a collapse averted, a disaster braked. In this way, to walk becomes an act of faith. We perform it daily: a two-beat miracle--an iambic teetering, a holding on and letting go." Paul Salopek

This was the first morning of the onset of daylight time. You know that biannual artificial disruption of the fall of darkness and emergence of light. A self inflicted crack in chronobiology, a bump in biorhythm, a poke in the pendulum of the circadian clock consequently sustaining an insidious assault of living systems. Otherwise it was a beautiful morning.

Participants were greeted with a very comfortable 54 degrees, no wind, and only an occasional drop of rain. The forest floor was clean, quiet, and soft displaying refreshing signs that recent rainfall was replenishing the the moisture depleted soil. This made for a basically good smooth trail but for a few slick spots around puddles which did grow larger near the far end  of the road but none were impassable. Mud slung evidence of the journey was visible on splattered shoes and tracks up the back side of legs. In my case the mud went all the way to the shoulder blades. Not because I ran fast but that I fell down hill skidding on knees and elbows, then barrel rolled to finish the slide on my back relatively unharmed. Indeed Paul Salopek is correct, walking is falling.

Present today were John, Melissa, Nichole, Joe, Mark, Toni, Peter, Sheri, Bob, two others arrived seconds after we set out but I wasn't able to get their names, and the Smart one in our midst Tonya who ran at the normal time. Others that were absent may have stayed home to reset their circadian clocks.

I'm taking this opportunity to give recognition to, and appreciation for, Tom and Nancy in maintaining the heartbeat of the Fog Dodgers. They are always there when you need someone to run or walk with and put much effort into blogging and reporting information to the group. Thank you Tom and Nancy we are grateful to you for your work in making it so easy for the rest of us to simply show up when we can to join other nice people for a pleasant walk or run.

Bob,

You have raised the bar. So far, I might add, that I can't even think of trying to go above it. I can only hope that you will blog more often. Thank you very much and your kind words are much appreciated.

Thanks to John also, for his continued assistance in keeping the blog a beautiful thing.

We are in Gilroy today, where it was 91 degrees! See you all on Sunday.

Tom
