The Fog Dodgers invite all residents and visitors of the Mendocino Coast to join us on our weekly group runs and walks. We have runners and walkers of all abilities (and even some bikers) and we have only one "rule" - we start at exactly 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. Exercise at your own pace (1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back) and experience the fresh Mendocino coastal air.

Fog Dodgers provides a fun, safe way to explore some of our local trails and back roads and to meet new friends. You can find out where we're going to be by reading the bottom of last week's post, then clicking on the "Our Routes" tab above. We average 15-20 persons each Sunday and typically half will go to breakfast together afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

Ward Avenue

This one is at MacKerricher, came from "Oxymoronical" on my Yahoo Weather page

What a great morning!  I wasn't sure about how Ward Avenue would work out this morning.  I knew that it was going to be a 6 foot high tide and I figured that would eliminate any chance for a beach run or walk.  I also knew that if we went south from the start, we would soon have to traverse soft sand.  Turns out, some of the group did go north and there was plenty of beach, for running or walking.  And, going south, State Parks has created nice access trails of firm packed rock to connect previously washed out sections of trail.  We'll do this venue a lot more often, very pretty!!

It was 40 degrees this morning with just a slight breeze out of the south.  The ocean, the clouds and even the shoreline were really pretty this morning, making for a perfect morning.  Besides that, it was our photographer's birthday and he brought his visiting son, Nicholas.   Thank you, John and Happy Birthday!!

Big River

It was another one of those mornings, you know the kind, the kind when it's so cold you can't stand still.  It was impossible to keep everyone from jumping the gun (my watch!).  Not that it was all that cold, 37 I think, but when taking the wind chill in to account, maybe minus 10.  Even John and Rod, they led the masses and John is one that is almost always early, wearing shorts,  and goes out before the sun to take photos like these:

Earlier this week on his way to our Tuesday run, John swung by Point Cabrillo.  You all know how full the moon was, well here's a nice shot of the moon and it looks like the lighthouse is spotlighting it.   Just before getting to the lighthouse, Caspar Bay looked like this (below):

Caspar Logging Roads

"Running is a great investment.  Your principal is low.  Your rate of return is enormous, and it keeps growing every year.  And there are no hidden charges, unless you count an occasional blister." -- Florence Griffith Joyner and John Hanc, Running For Dummies

Great Blue Heron, J. Loomis
This morning was cold (37), clear, calm and beautiful.  We met at the junction of JSF Roads 500 and 600 and then some ran and walked up the hill, while others ran and walked down the hill.  I'll speak for everyone, when I say we had a really nice time.

Present this morning:  Zelda, Barbara, Jennifer, Linda, Tom T., Cheryl, Neil, Orah, Steve, Nichole, Melissa, Katie, Nancy T., Roger, Gay, Mark, Greg, Fran, Nancy B., Rick, John, Rod, Nancy and Tom (24).

In the Advocate News, I read that State Parks is going to be starting a lot of road work on the Big River Road  soon, necessitating closure of the road during the work.  I think we'll run and walk Big River Road (The Ron Jahelka Trail) more often as long as it's open.  So,

NEXT SUNDAY, 1/19/14 @ 8:00 A.M.: BIG RIVER LOGGING ROAD, See "Our Routes" above.

EVERY TUESDAY @ 7:15 A.M.: RUSSIAN GULCH STATE PARK, beginning on Point Cabrillo Drive, 1/10 of a mile north of its south end.

Russian Gulch State Park

I like to see, that when Fog Dodgers have family or friends visiting, they often bring them to our Sunday runs and walks.  I think it must mean that we're having fun.  This morning, it was a chilly 38 degrees and hadn't been daylight for very long, yet Nancy and Rick B. brought their friends Tahryn and Ben.  Melissa and Nichole brought Katie.  Thank you all.
